About Us
J.S. Wright and Sons Ltd are the World’s largest and oldest company supplying English Cricket Bat Willow. We are a family run business with a long and proud history of cricket bat blade manufacture. We supply to cricket bat manufacturers internationally (www.cricketbatwillow.com).
We are expanding our factory and require more skilled yard workers to join the team. Experience isn’t essential as full training will be given. Our philosophy is to treat employees as we would expect to be treated and we want people to develop both skills and earnings and be happy in their work.
The Job
The job involves skilled manual labour, using circular saws, splitting machines, chainsaws and the opportunity to drive forklift trucks, a tractor and a telehandler. Every employee will learn each skill to a high standard, and this is both an inside and outside environment with rotated tasks to offer variety.
All new employees will undergo a training period of around 12 to 21 months, depending how fast they pick things up, where they will be supported in learning how to undertake the variety of tasks involved in creating a cricket bat ‘cleft’, including obtaining a chainsaw certificate.
The Pay
A mix of piecework (bonus rate) and day rate paid weekly
Piecework is when you are paid based on the number of items you produce, so the more effort you put in the more you can earn. You are guaranteed a basic day rate whatever you produce, but you can increase earnings considerably. All targets are obtainable if you work steadily and conscientiously.
Our pay is based on a mix of hourly rates and piece work rates, but as a general guide, a new starter learning on their first job on the circular saw for two days a week with three days other jobs with some piecework can earn around £24,960 per annum (£480.00 a week) or £32,760 per annum (£630.00 a week) including 10 hours overtime. A fully trained and experienced employee who puts effort on piecework jobs can earn from £35,430.00 per annum (£681.00 a week), to in excess of £46,000.00 per annum (£885.00 a week) or more including 10 hours overtime.
More detail of how your pay will progress is below:
• Minimum starting pay for over 18’s is based on the over 23 National Living wage hourly rate of £11.44.
• Increased rates of starting pay may be given if the candidate has a valid chainsaw, telehandler or small industrial forklift truck ticket.
• After a successful three-month probation period an automatic hourly rate increase is given of £0.30 an hour (Not if you already had the rise when started with a ticket above).
• Further hourly pay rate increases will be given every three months during training subject to appropriate progress. We would expect a new trainee to be earning a basic rate of £12.49 per hour by the end of the training period which is 18 months for all jobs (or even before if they are a fast learner!).
• New employees can start piecework as soon as they are ready. For example, there is one piecework job available immediately, with no experience, which can pay anywhere between your basic rate up to £12.75 per hour, or even £16.30 per hour with some effort. This job will be allocated to new employees once or twice a week to help increase their earnings early on.
• Once more tasks are learned, the piece work element means that the more effort you put in and the more skills you have the more you can earn and pay rates on piece work jobs can increase to between £12.83 to £23.00 plus an hour for experienced employees. Piece work is on average available for 4 days per week once fully trained with different rates on differently skilled jobs.
• Overtime is also frequently available to anyone that would like it, which gives everyone the opportunity to increase their earnings. 2 hours every afternoon from 3.30 to 5.30 and Saturdays up to 8 hours. Time and a third for the first 10 hours overtime then time and a half for any hours over that. It is available at least 9 months of the year, sometimes 12 months if production requirements are high.
The Benefits
In addition to the above piece work rates, there is a bonus of up to £300 per quarter, based on good performance and positive behaviours , and an attendance bonus worth up to £760.00 per year. We supply all necessary PPE and employees have access to free tea and coffee, and free cold canned drinks on hot days. Twice yearly appraisals are carried out to get feedback from employees and give feed back on a personal basis.
We also offer the following further benefits:
• A pension scheme
• A Medicash scheme Level 2, which helps with the costs of eye care and dental care among other extra health benefits such as a health helpline.
• 22 days holiday per year (plus bank holidays). Employees can also accrue holiday for long service and trade in Saturday overtime for more holiday entitlement up to 28 days pa including the extra for long service (plus bank holidays).
• Discretionary interest free loans up to £1500.00, subject to service.
• After 5 years’ service, a 3-month unpaid sabbatical is available.
• Long service awards.
• After two years of service, Death in Service Life Assurance, subject to insurer’s scheme rules
• Accident at Work insurance, subject to insurer’s scheme rules
• Christmas vouchers and Christmas bonus when profits allow.
• Company sick pay after 12 months of service (subject to policy rules)
The Hours
Hours are Monday to Friday 7.00am to 3.30pm, with a paid 15-minute break at 10.00am, 30 minutes for lunch at 1.00pm and another 10 minutes at the end of the day. Employees can opt for overtime from 3.30 to 5.30 on weekdays and up to 8 hours on Saturdays (subject to requirements).
