Crynodeb
To assist in the provision of an efficient Cytogenetic Service under the direction of the Scientific staff. To undertake general laboratory housekeeping duties including cleaning and sterilising glassware and other equipment, preparation of sterile media and reagents according to SOPs, staining, labelling, filing of microscope slides, preparation of cultures for long term storage To demonstrate an understanding of what tests are performed and why they are performed To operate and maintain equipment according to SOPs To book in and cross-reference samples and patient details onto the appropriate manual and computerised database. To understand and use good sterile technique at all times and especially when using the biological safety cabinets. To collect and distribute items throughout the laboratory and where necessary from or to other parts of the hospital. To process samples from various tissue samples including blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, chorionic villus, POC and skin and set up appropriate cell cultures as required. This will involve contact with identifiable fetal parts from intra-uterine deaths and termination of pregnancies. To harvest cell cultures and prepare chromosomes on microscope slides from these cultures. This will involve the use of a phase contrast microscope to assess the quality of the slides and make appropriate adjustments using the controlled environment cabinet. To prepare and correctly package samples for send away to other laboratories for testing To extract DNA from a range of patient sample types and evaluate quality and quantity required. To dispose of waste in accordance with laboratory/hospital regulations.
