We are looking for a Commercial Waste Officer to join the Waste and Street Cleansing team. You will be a motivated person with commercial waste experience to help retain and obtain new commercial waste customers within the London Borough of Richmond. You will be able to advise business owners of their responsibilities in relation to storage and disposal of commercial waste and recycling and obtain new business where possible in accordance with the current waste legislation and current pricing schedule.

You will be responsible for achieving revenue objectives through customer retention, and you will liaise with existing and new customers to provide advice and services where required. You will make contributions to the development of a new commercial waste system and lead on the delivery of a commercial food waste service to support businesses with new legislation.

You will be proactive, keen to get out and meet people, working with the council’s external contractor to ensure the collections service is highly performing. You will be responsible for monitoring the commercial waste collection performance and working with the contractor to improve services where required.

Home working is permitted subject to operational requirements and in accordance with Council policies, and equipment will be provided to enable this. However, you will also be required to travel to locations around the boroughs regularly to conduct site visits, to meet with customers as required. This may also involve early morning or evening site visits to monitor services

This role is a permanent position, and you will be part of a small but friendly waste team within a large workforce, most of which serves both Richmond and Wandsworth Councils.

Objective of the role

Retain and obtain new commercial waste contracts

Develop, with support the commercial food waste service offer

Provide support and input into the new commercial waste system which will manage the existing portfolio and provide a comprehensive customer service for new contracts.

Within a larger project team lead on the annual garden waste renewal programme from the Waste and Street Cleansing perspective.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge and practical experience of delivering an effective commercial waste service.

Knowledge of local authority commercial waste and recycling services, procedures and techniques.

Experience of developing and maintaining large datasets.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience of effective engagement with businessess, property managers, small businesses and other stakeholders.

A full clean UK driving licence and/or be able to travel to sites borough wide on a regular basis.
