Crynodeb

The paediatric epilepsy service at the RACH provides care to children and young people up to the age of 17 years old, living in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. The team work in close partnership with the South East Thames Paediatric Epilepsy Group (SETPEG). Our regional tertiary support system is provided by Neurology Consultants at Evelina , London with whom we have a close working relationship. There is a dedicated paediatric epilepsy team which includes 2 full time Consultants (including this post) who also contribute to the Consultant of the week covering the paediatric inpatient ward. There is also a third consultant who delivers a first fit clinic. There is support from a nursing team of a full time Clinical nurse specialist (band 7) and a part time band 6 nurse. MDT Clinics are run across two sites at the RACH and PRH (Haywards Heath) on different days of the week. We organise a weekly Epilepsy team meeting which allows discussion of complex patients, presentation of case studies and academic articles/topics of interest and occasional drug representative presentations. There are currently circa approximately 500 CYP under our epilepsy outpatients. Inpatient care takes place at the childrens ward on L9 of the RACH and also if required on HDU. Paediatric EEGs (awake, sleep and ambulatory) are performed at Hurstwood Park Neurosciences centre in Haywards Heath. We have a monthly EEG review meeting which allows for close working with our neurophysiology colleagues. The epilepsy team also works in close conjunction with a newly developed service called Function First which provides rehabilitative treatment for patients with non-epileptic seizure The RACH can perform MRI scans with or without sedation and general anaesthesia. This is a replacement post arising out of current consultants relocation. The Alex is very proud of the epilepsy service it delivers, and we are committed to supporting to the development of this essential service. We aspire to in the near future provide home video telemetry, EEG inpatient monitoring and to provide outreach ketogenic and VNS clinics for the region. As part of this epilespy role the consultant will also participate in a 1 in 12 Consultant of the week model covering general paediatric in patients on a 27 bedded general paediatric ward.
