Description of the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Associate Practitioner to join our busy Immunophenotyping team, in one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. This is a newly created role within the expanding service, which forms part of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostics Service (SIHMDS). You will support this expanding team and provide a vital role in specialising in the diagnostics of leukaemia and lymphoma, as well as other associated haematological malignancies. Our SIHMDS services a population of >3.5 million people in N London and Essex. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking and innovative service, a laboratory that leads research and is involved in national and international collaborations to help determine the future of flow cytometry.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership  is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.  The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.  

The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.  We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. The team
The Immunophenotyping department at Bart’s Health NHS Trust is looking for a confident and motivated Associate Practitioner to support the laboratory service. This is a key post, developing and delivering our local and trust strategy. Bart’s Health NHS Trust is situated in East London and is formed by The Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Hospital, the London Chest Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital.

The Immunophenotyping department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service. We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to assist in supporting this excellent team. You will have experience of working in a pathology laboratory, be organised and work well under pressure. All our highly dedicated scientists and support workers are supported by consultant colleagues, and these productive working relationships ensure that all staff are ever mindful of our impact on the patient pathway, as well as forge strong links between laboratory and clinical specialities.

Technology & Equipment
The department has state of the art next generation flow cytometry facilities, with excellent collaborative relationships with industry and often beta test the latest equipment. The department is involved in translational research and had a range of specialist / bespoke manual assays.

Training and Development
We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of IBMS accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage professional development. The Immunophenotyping department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site. The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited, and has full HCPC/IBMS and NSHCS training status.

Network
The department is actively engaged in the expansion and development of the East and South East NHS Pathology Network, with consolidation of many specialised services on the Royal London Hospital site.
