Summary


To enable us to meet the future needs of our service we have invested significantly in our urgent and emergency care services, developing a post registration pathway for paramedics. Through this programme we are seeking to employ two relief development positions for highly motivated individuals. successful candidates will be expected work at any of the 7 Specialist Paramedic Critical Care (SPCC) bases and the critical care desk in the Wakefield Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), back filling vacant shifts as core rota SPCCs rotate into the MERIT service. once the relief staff have reached the level 2 scope of practice they will also be able to work as part of the MERIT team.

Our stations are at: Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Doncaster, Hull and York, with our MERIT service also been situated in Leeds. please consider these locations and the potential travel burden expected of this role before applying.

The relief Specialist Paramedic Critical Care, will join our evolving team lead by the Advanced Paramedics in Critical Care. Successful applicants will join an apprenticeship post graduate program of education and internally delivered support to develop their critical thinking and decision-making skills, along with a staggered internal programme of education to develop their clinical skills in this specialist area of pre-hospital care.

The post holders will work in small teams responding across Yorkshire but support the wider critical care team with rotation into the EOC in Wakefield. Here they will work within the critical care cell which will provide clinical support to the wider EOC team, along with oversight of the dispatch of critical care resources. They will also provide specialist remote support to other clinicians in need of support and guidance in difficult and complex situations, using their developed knowledge and critical reasoning to support, guide and mentor those accessing the service.

We are seeking qualified HCPC registered Paramedics with a minimum of 3 years post registration experience in pre-hospital emergency care who can demonstrate experience of mentorship and clinical development.

We will support you to complete the Post Graduate Diploma in Enhanced Clinical Practice which you need to successfully be signed off as a Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care (unless already completed). Candidates must be able to demonstrate a good level of academic learning at level 6 or above in a relevant subject. Please note the role Paramedic Critical Care is a training position, qualification as specialist is required to remain a permanent member of the team.

Those needing to join the post graduate program will commence university in Sheffield in Oct 2024 and must be available to attend on the following dates: (both internal & external candidates)

15th October virtual

21st, 22nd, 23rd,24th,25th October in person

Internal Clinical Course will take place W/C 7th October & W/C 14th October, for internal candidates (external candidates will be organised separately)

Critical Care Paramedics operate at the Specialist Paramedic level, providing 24/7 enhanced clinical support and supervision of staff across a range of incidents within the pre-hospital environment. Working with a greater autonomy, the post holder will provide enhanced clinical management and coordinate the care of patients with complex and challenging health care needs, responding to patients with acute or critical illness, serious injury or major trauma in emotive and demanding situations or environments. Along side providing clinical leadership, supervision and education within the team and to the wider YAS staff groups.



Utilising their clinical skills and knowledge required of the role, the post holder is responsible for the competent assessment, diagnosis, care, treatment and referral and/or transport of patients and their carers/relatives in emergency or life-threatening situations.



Respond to emergency calls as directed by the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) using a range of appropriate transport platforms, responding as a primary response, co-responder or additional resource.



In addition to providing an operational response, Critical Care Paramedics contribute to the clinical supervision, leadership, advice and support within the Emergency Operations Centre and the post holder will be expected to rotate into the EOC as part of their core operational role.

Work as part of a Dr SPCC team (MERIT) from Manor Mill Station Leeds

The post holder will be clinically responsible for ensuring own safe and effective clinical performance and demonstrate excellence in clinical leadership through role modelling values and professional standards and mentorship in practice.



In order to carry out these duties, the post holder will work in a reliable, safe and professional manner, in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards of Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.



Undertake responsibilities as a lone worker in the community in the 999 setting, or rotate through emergency and critical care settings.



Work flexibly, undertake in agreement with the Line Manager and Advanced Paramedics, other work as required which is commensurate with the grade of the post and the skills of the post holder.



Attend HM courts and Coroner’s court when required.
