The Post
This post is based at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals. The successful candidate will be responsible for provision of anaesthesia in theatres and obstetrics including pre-operative assessment, post operative analgesia and follow up when indicated. The duties also include provision of resident cover to the Critical Care Unit both during daytime and out of hours.
Description of Working Pattern
There are three rolling rotas rotating through Critical Care Unit, General Theatres, and Obstetrics. Job plan will be for 12 PAs with 11 DCC and 1 SPA. The proposed timetable and PA allocation are indicative of the work required but is not rigid and will be flexible depending on service needs. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Deputy Chief of Service on behalf of the Chief of Service and Medical Director within three months of appointment.

THE TRUST:
Frimley Health Trust is a Foundation Trust which provides inpatient services on three sites: Heatherwood in Ascot, Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey. In addition, the Trust provides outpatient and diagnostic facilities at St Mark’s Hospital (Maidenhead), King Edward VII Hospital (Windsor), Upton Hospital (Slough) and within Bracknell Forest PCT (Primary Care Trust). This post is for Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals.
Wexham Park Hospital
Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, has approx 400beds with a full range of services including general medicine and its sub-specialities, paediatrics, general surgery, urology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, otolaryngology, oral surgery and a sub-regional plastic surgery unit which has an extensive catchment area. In the theatre complex there are 9 new theatres and two obstetric theatres. There is a large Accident and Emergency department, a 12 bedded Critical Care Unit (for which 10 daytime and all weekend daytime sessions are covered by consultant anaesthetists), a 16 bed Day Surgery Unit and 16 bed Short Stay Unit. There is also an 8 bedded Coronary Care Unit, with 6 PCCU (Post Coronary Care Unit) beds and an angiography suite. There is an excellent new rehabilitation department, a centralised laboratory, and diagnostic imaging including a new spiral CT scanner and the MRI Scanner Suite on the Wexham Park site.
The Theatres
The theatre complex has 6 new and 3 upgraded theatres with two separate obstetrics theatres. The theatre suite has a video-link to the John Lister Postgraduate Centre and has a seminar room within the complex. The theatres cater for all specialities within the one suite except for the obstetric theatres, which are located within the delivery suite.
Heatherwood Hospital
Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot is our elective surgery site with 62 beds for orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, vascular, breast, plastic surgery and gynaecology. There are 6 theatres including the day unit. There is a diagnostic imaging unit MRI and a CT scanner. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation are also on site. The new state of the art hospital opened for service in March 2022. It will be used for planned procedures and features six operating theatres, 48 inpatient beds and 22 day cubicles. It is expected to be a flagship hospital for elective orthopaedic operations and is expected to treat 168,000 patients a year.
Obstetrics
We have just over 5000 deliveries a year, anaesthetists being involved in the care of about half of these patients. Obstetric anaesthesia is covered by consultants for all 10 daytime sessions along with a resident specialist doctor or trainees, with no other responsibilities when on duty for labour ward. Out of hours consultant supervision of the resident specialist doctor or trainee, is provided by the consultant on call for general theatres and obstetrics, separate from ITU cover. We run obstetric anaesthetic antenatal clinics for the high risk patients, and HDU care can be provided on labour ward or within the main ITU which is close by. Midwifery led care is in the birth centre at Wexham Park.
The Critical Care Unit
A state of the art, purpose built 12 bedded unit is currently funded for 8 level 1 and 4 level 2 bed spaces. The unit admits over 680 patients per year of which 75-80% receive level 1care. Full invasive facilities are available. The Unit is ICNARC registered and supports a part time audit nurse, and the Unit supports an Outreach service. Critical Care Follow-up clinics are offered as a service to long stay survivors.A team of 9 Consultant Anaesthetistsprovide cover for the unit on a weekly basis; daily resident cover is provided by anaesthetic trainees and specialty doctors. Critical Care offices and Seminar Room are available; regular weekly M&M and Journal club meetings are held with consultant and registrar participation.
The Pain Service
There is a comprehensive acute and chronic pain service provided by the department. We currently have one acute pain consultants, four chronic pain consultants (across 3 sites), one specialty doctor and 3 specialist pain nurses who provide support for follow up clinics and Acupuncture/TENS clinics. There is input from a Psychologist, PT, OT and Pharmacy in the pain services.

Teaching, audit and research
The anaesthetic department offers an active teaching programme for the doctors in training which includes a fixed half day each week for teaching within the departments in the Trust. Consultants also provide tutorials and support for those staff preparing for examinations. Specialty doctors preparing for exams are encouraged to attend these teaching sessions. Participation in clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in this department. Clinical research projects are encouraged.
There is a simulator centre (WEXSIM CENTRE) for training and upgrading technical skills for all staff.
Postgraduate medical education
There is a modern purpose built postgraduate centre at Wexham Park, which is the headquarters of postgraduate medical education for the district. The centre comprises a lecture theatre, 4 seminar rooms, the main medical library, a skills lab and a large meeting and dining area. The lecture theatre has computer facilities, and the library is equipped with on-line facilities.
Continuing professional development
The post holder will be expected to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs.
The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit; this is currently £750 per annum.
