Crynodeb
The Hillingdon Trauma & Orthopaedic department is run by 15 Consultants. 15 of these run the trauma service over a 15 week rolling on-call rota. On their non-trauma weeks, they run an elective service alongside the remaining 14 consultants. There is a 30 bedded Orthopaedic Ward currently catering for both elective and emergency patients at Hillingdon. A short-stay Orthopaedic speciality ward at Mount Vernon Hospital is part of the department, catering only for elective patients. There is also a Day Case surgical unit on each of the two hospitals to which all Consultants have access with other specialities. There are beds as required on a separate paediatric unit.
There is a wide range of general elective orthopaedics undertaken, the Consultants covering most of the elective orthopaedic sub specialities. For trauma, each Consultant's ‘take’ is for one week at a time. There is a daily morning x-ray conference followed by a trauma round and then a new patient fracture clinic. In the afternoon there is also an all-day operating list for trauma patients that have been admitted. This provides an excellent opportunity for teaching and experience. The department is fully equipped for modern trauma management.
