Lancaster District has an outstanding collection of heritage assets including over 1300 listed buildings, 38 conservation areas and many areas of archaeological importance. Among the nationally notable heritage assets are Lancaster Castle and Morecambe’s Midland Hotel.
Lancaster District is experiencing much interest in investment and development. The coastal, rural, and urban areas each have their own development and regeneration opportunities and challenges.
We are looking for a professionally qualified and experienced Conservation Officer to support the interesting and diverse challenges of conserving and enhancing the district’s heritage assets.
The post holder will assist in all areas of heritage conservation and provide specialist input into planning policy and development proposals.
Candidates must possess a degree level qualification in Built Conservation, Architecture or a closely related discipline and be able to evidence how the application of their knowledge of heritage legislation, procedures, and policies, have informed their sound and successful experience of dealing with proposals affecting heritage assets.
This is a professional level post; the post holder must have considerable experience in a similar role and must have achieved and be committed to maintaining full IHBC membership. Potentially a candidate with sufficient experience but not yet with full IHBC membership may be appointed where they can demonstrate a commitment to seeking full IHBC membership within 6 months of appointment.
This is a part-time post; the post holder will work two full days each week (14.8 hours per week). The post-holder will be part of a well-resourced small team that comprises of two full-time posts; a Principal Officer and a Conservation Graduate, and another part-time Conservation Officer who works three days per week.
This post is permanent. You will be based at Lancaster Town Hall. Whilst the role does allow for hybrid working, attendance in the office will also be required according to the service’s needs. You may be required on occasion to work outside normal office hours in accordance with the needs of the service.
A full current UK driving licence is essential, as the post holder will be required to undertake site visits across the district. As a result you will be required to sign up to the authorised external DVLA driving licence validation organisation that we use to manage and monitor our employees driving licence data.
The Council currently operates an excellent Flexible Working Hours Scheme which applies to this post. Subject to the needs of this business, this may allow employees to work between the hours of 6:00am-10:30pm.
Flexible working friendly – we offer hybrid working, a generous flexi-time scheme, and opportunity to work with your team to establish working hours to enable you to maximise your work-life balance.
