Flexible Location: Based throughout Scotland, NES is a remote friendly employer supporting office and hybrid working. Frequent presence at our offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh is a requirement of this role, as well as occasional travel to other locations. We’re happy to talk about how you want to work.
Work Pattern: Permanent, Full Time, 37 hours per week.
You must have eligibility and entitlement to work in the UK which is required to be maintained throughout your period of employment.
Who We Are
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the national health board with statutory responsibilities to effect sustainable change through workforce development, education and training across the health and social care system in Scotland, while working at UK level with partner organisations.
The Medical Directorate is responsible to the NES Board and through the Board to Scottish Government for the commissioning and delivery of postgraduate medical education in Scotland. This training is delivered in general practices and health boards to standards set by the General Medical Council (GMC).
The Medical Directorate hosts the NES Healthcare Science workstream. Its primary function is to:
Ensure that the education and lifelong learning needs of clinical professionals covered by healthcare science serving NHS Scotland are effectively met
Ensure that all aspects of NES strategy relevant to these professions are met
Ensure that multi-disciplinary aspects of NES have a robust contribution from the Directorate, and in certain cases, are led by the Directorate
NES Healthcare Science has a specific role in training commissions (to best secure the postgraduate scientist workforce), generic CPD and in the quality assurance of NHS training for scientific staff.
The Health Care Science core team leads our training quality assurance programme; CPD development and delivery programme; postgraduate training commissioning; and careers engagement.
This senior leadership post is an integral part of the Medical Directorate.

The Opportunity
We are looking for an Associate Director to lead the Healthcare Science workstream within NES and to contribute to the development and delivery of the NES education and training agenda to support the Scottish Government’s policy direction and implementation plans, for Healthcare Science disciplines and subdisciplines.

Associate Directors offer a broad range of skills and experience, if you can offer some or all of these, we’d love you to apply:
HCPC registered or equivalent voluntary register in healthcare science
Masters Level qualification or equivalent postgraduate scientific experience
Knowledge and experience of leading and supporting workstreams that enhance career and role development for the Healthcare Science workforce
Proven track record of working at a senior level within the NHS, care, or wider public sector, or similar complex private sector or university organisation
Ability to work at a strategic level across the directorate and organisation as well as with external partners such as Scottish Government, health and care,
education partners, and other national bodies including the social care and wider public sector
Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of policy, practice, education and professional structures and processes, including HCPC regulation and other professional standards
Experienced leader with the management skills to drive, negotiate and deliver change and innovation
Experience and understanding of the key factors and practices essential to high-quality learning and education and how these are effectively embedded and continually enhanced
The skills necessary to develop and utilise an extensive and complex professional network of contacts and relationships with government agencies,
funding bodies, professional regulatory bodies, other education providers and the health and care service
Proven and demonstrable ability to function and support others within the context of a rapidly changing environment
Ability to think creatively, analyse information, understand complex arguments,
make judgements and reconcile competing demands
Demonstrate honesty, integrity, care and compassion when dealing with others, utilising tact and persuasion skills when necessary
Experienced people manager, with the ability to lead and grow successful teams
It’s not essential to be in an Associate Director role right now. You may be returning from a career break (e.g. maternity, paternity, caring for others) or returning after working in another field. Your experiences elsewhere can bring a fresh perspective to our work.
