Serco have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Marine Superintendent to join our Maritime team on a 12-month fixed term contract. Under the Maritime Services contract for the Royal Navy, Serco is responsible for the long-term operation of approximately 100 vessels in the three UK naval ports (Portsmouth, Devonport, and Clyde). Vessels are primarily small commercial vessels such as tugs, passenger transfer boats, workboats, and barges, with two worldwide support vessels.
Reporting to the Marine Superintendent Scotland, this role is to assist and deputise for the Marine Superintendent in their absence with functional responsibility/accountability to Head of In Port Operations.
The Assistant Marine Superintendent will be required to work between Great Harbour, Greenock and HMNB Clyde (Faslane) day to day with occasional visits to Kyle of Lochalsh. This role will form an integral part of the Port Management Team and work alongside the Operations, Technical and HSEQ team.
As part of the Marine Operations team, you will assist to ensure that vessels meet the standards and criteria required by Company, Customer, Class, and Statutory regulations and ensure that vessels are operated by SQEP personnel in a safe, efficient, and economical manner and in full compliance with such requirements and regulations.

Role Responsibilities:



- Support the Marine Superintendent with marine operations, continuous improvement and projects as tasked by senior management.
- Conduct internal audits to verify effective operations and are prescribed as per Company’s SMS and International regulations.
- Support Master’s with enquires on legislative requirements for different vessel types.
- Conduct periodical general vessel inspections, verifying that company safety standards are being met.
- Conduct incident/accident investigations, identify root cause, and complete reports in designated time frame.
- Local Assure database Management. Manage outstanding health, safety and environmental reports, including exporting local weekly reports, inform managers of outstanding actions, and disseminate closed reports as required.
- Input data into Assure including unplanned events, inspections and surveys, audits, and zero harm tours.
- Create generic processes and procedures to add to the evolving SMS.
- Review, amend and authorise, local operating procedures, vessel operating procedures and risk assessments as required.
- Supervise operational trials to determine vessels operational capabilities and
- support the generation of associated documentation.
- Support the ongoing project of improving and modernising the chart and publication management on vessels.
- Support the emergency preparedness of vessels including onboard drills and training.
- Work closely with vessels Technical Superintendents to monitor the general condition and maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting appliances.
- Assist as required with any issues which may have an impact on classification and flag state regulations.
- Conduct port assessments, and support ongoing vessel access and egress project.
- Any other responsibilities which may be required which are within skills sets/capability and are commensurate with the role.


What you’ll need to do the role:

Essential


- Officer of the Watch Unlimited STCW II/1 as minimum, Chief Mate II/2 Unlimited STCW is desirable.
- Demonstrable understanding of legal statutory regulations and understanding of ISM Code.
- Demonstrable thorough understanding of CoSWP
- Demonstrable experience in the crafting and reviewing of risk assessments in the maritime environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with people at all levels across the business, both afloat and ashore.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Fully conversant with Microsoft Office Applications.
- Seagoing experience preferably with commercial vessel background.
- Has a drive for delivering a quality service, values positive customer and collegiate feedback and understands how to improve operational effectiveness.
- Demonstrable organisational skills and eye for detail.
- Evidence of relevant and up to date continuous personnel development.


Desirable


- ISM Auditor Qualification
- Experience as Safety Officer/Accident Investigation
- Possesses an understanding of RN, MoD, and Merchant Navy operating environments
- Qualified safety professional – minimum NEBOSH Level3 or equivalent
