Introduction
The Communications Office is responsible for the House of Commons communications strategy, delivering internal and external communications to and on behalf of the whole House, as well as learning and development for the profession and delivers significant bicameral communications on behalf of the House of Commons and House of Lords. The team sits within the Office of the Executive and provides communications support (including branding and design, social media, photography, a 24/7 press office, internal communications, planning and comms strategy) to all House teams.
The Role
The Brand Designer role leads on and drives brand standards, collaborating with design team colleagues, the wider Communications Office, and content producers in shaping the evolution of our brand identity strategy to establish a clear and concise brand voice, tone, and visual language, continually iterating to ensure relevance and relatability to our audience(s).
Working with the Head of Visual Brand and the Creative Lead you will steer the future direction of the House of Commons brand identity (and in collaboration with the Lords the UK Parliament identity), building close working relationships with colleagues to improve understanding across Parliament of the value and impact of visual communications and successfully embed a consistent and coherent system.
Working closely with our Senior Creative Studio Manager and the Creative Lead you will deliver impactful creative solutions to briefs as wide-ranging as events and exhibitions, internal campaigns, digital platforms and key publications. The role has line management responsibility for 1 Mid-Weight Designer and advises colleagues within the Communications Office and business areas across the organisation on best practice whilst being an advocate for pushing creative boundaries.
As Brand Guardian, you will oversee the use of our identity systems by internal teams, our external agencies and partners. Advising and supporting colleagues across Parliament, the Communications Office, the Communications Network, and our community of Brand Practitioners to consistently interpret and apply our brand identities across all touchpoints and developing self-service solutions and toolkits for teams.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
- Lead on and drives brand standards, collaborating with the design team, the Communications Office, and content producers in shaping the evolution of our brand identity strategy to establish a clear and concise brand voice, tone, and visual language.
- Bring specialist professional knowledge to lead and oversee the development and management of our identity systems and guidelines and guiding teams and external creative partners on their interpretation and application across all touchpoints.
- Advocate for consistent and cohesive design throughout the organisation, educating and enabling others to create on-brand experiences. Contributes to the development, production, and delivery of workshops.
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
- Significant brand identity management experience and demonstrable stakeholder management skills to effectively develop, manage and maintain brand identity standards across a complex organisation.
- Highly creative with proven ability to deliver imaginative and compelling creative for digital and print.
- Proven ability to work inclusively and flexibly within a team and across functions, promoting cross-team working whenever possible to build a collaborative culture.
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively, work at pace, to ensure that work is delivered against tight deadlines and to quality standards. Experience of working closely with studio/traffic managers and commissioning teams to assess/challenge briefs and scope out requirements.
- Strong communication skills, particularly the ability to influence decision makers, explain design concepts to senior stakeholders and colleagues who lack a background in design.
