Crynodeb

Our academic output across Moorfields and our primary academic collaborator, UCL, was the highest globally in ophthalmology when last assessed. It is within this fantastic historical context, coupled with the evolving possibilities arising from health data research that we are seeking to further develop our capabilities with the appointment of a Director of discovery, who will be key to the successful implementation of the organisation’s strategy and help us to work collaboratively to optimise our discovery portfolio.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver in parallel with the public advertisement of the post.

The Director of Discovery is an executive member of the Trust Board, responsible for continuing, further improving and scaling our world-renowned research across the entire Moorfields system, and disseminating this locally, nationally and internationally.

Their remit will encompass the full spectrum of healthcare innovation delivered through a network of partnerships, foremost with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and extending across public and private sectors globally. Moorfields Eye Hospital and the IoO are amongst the most productive clinical academic collaborations in the world.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead the Moorfields agenda and help contribute to the discovery agenda internationally.

Candidates will offer a track record of achievement in research and development and spread and adoption of innovation. They will ideally have a deep understanding of the UK health research landscape across NHS and university sectors, substantial knowledge of the national health research policy framework and experience of spread and adoption and of commercialisation.

They will possess excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including senior NHS and university leaders, academics, major funding bodies and industry.

At Moorfields, we provide more than just an excellent career and great colleagues to work with. We also offer:
• Salary including High-Cost Area Supplement
• Opportunity to join the NHS Pension Scheme
• Free 24/7 independent counselling service
• Learning and development opportunities
• Easy and quick transport links
• A range of attractive benefits and discounts
• Access to Blue Light Card and other NHS Discount Schemes
• Free Pilates classes
• Full support and training to develop your skills
• Flexible working friendly organisation

And so much more! To see the full range of benefits we offer please see our Moorfields benefits document.

We work with a wide range of partners, including the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) our main academic partner, our two charities Moorfields Eye Charity, who are a major supporter of both Moorfields Eye Hospital and IoO, and the Friends of Moorfields as well as other academic partners, the wider sight loss sector and external commercial partners.

We are committed to reducing inequalities in eye care access and outcomes through innovating and collaborating to implement improvements in eye care at scale. We are committed to working in partnership with academic and clinical colleagues across the UK and internationally.

Our commitment to equity is at the heart of our organisational culture. The trust's aspiration for equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is a culture that enables all staff and patients to feel welcome and be respected and supports staff in realising their potential while helping patients achieve the best possible health outcomes. We are deeply committed to continuing to strengthen the diversity of our organisation. This is an inclusive and open process, and we welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds.
