The Genomics and Molecular Medicine service at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust are seeking an enthusiastic, well organized and highly motivated individual to join our dedicated and friendly Genomic Technologist Team as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA).

The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant is varied and includes collection of samples from various locations, specimen receipt and referral management, administrative tasks including computer entry, stock receipt/control as well as and a range of technical tasks such as DNA/RNA extraction and general laboratory housekeeping duties.

The ideal candidate will be well motivated, have excellent communication and IT skills, and be able to follow procedures accurately with meticulous attention to detail.

Previous experience in an NHS clinical laboratory or in analytical techniques would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be provided. A good level of secondary education is required with English, Maths and Science to GCSE (Grade A-C) or equivalent.

Please be aware that interviews will be held in person as there will be a practical element to the selection process. We will therefore be unable to support the interview process via remote methods (Teams).

The post-holder will be involved in the reception of samples and accurately entering patient and sample information onto the laboratory IT systems.

The post-holder will be responsible for various laboratory “housekeeping” duties including regular defrosting of laboratory fridges and freezers, cleaning laboratory glassware and cleaning/sterilising laboratory areas.

The post-holder will also be involved in stock control procedures for laboratory consumables.

With reference to SOP to undertake a range of technical duties, including processing of patient samples for storage or extraction of DNA.

Collecting samples from pathology reception, sorting through samples and entering details of patient/sample on to the laboratory computer system in an accurate and timely fashion.

Routine cleaning/maintenance of laboratory equipment and laboratory areas.

Regular de-frosting and cleaning of laboratory fridges and freezers.

Logging incubator and fridge/freezer temperatures throughout the laboratory areas.







The Genomic and Molecular Medicine Service is part of the Pathology Directorate based at City Hospital campus of Nottingham University Hospitals Trust and forms part of the East GLH as a Local Genomics Laboratory, alongside University Hospitals Leicester and Cambridge University Hospital as the lead laboratory.

The department brings together cytogenetics and molecular expertise into one genomics laboratory service. It is a friendly department with close working relationships with colleagues across Pathology, Clinical Genetics and Cancer Specialities. The department is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science and the Institute of Biomedical Medical Science as a training laboratory, supporting staff development and training opportunities. This is an exciting time to be working at NUH, shaping the Genomic service.
