MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities Clinical 1. Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base. 2. Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate. 3. Creates and utilises opportunities to promote the health and well-being of patients in their care. 4. Influence and monitor the standards of direct patient care delivery in accordance with best practice and operational protocols and guidelines. 5. Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising ones own abilities and limitations. 6. Promote good working relationships within the nursing teams providing appropriate advice and support. 7. Facilitate the development of standards of care and assist with the implementation of appropriate monitoring techniques. 8. Leads a nursing team to manage a group of patients throughout a shift. 9. Facilitate breaking bad news sessions between clinicians and patients. 10. Communicate bad news to patients and/or relatives where requested and/or appropriate. 11. To have the appropriate skills to administer/and co-ordinate care of haematology/ oncology patients to include the following: 12. Insertion of Peripheral Venous Cannula, Venepuncture, Venesection. 13. Management of central venous access devices with appropriate advice/teaching/ assessment of patients and/or other health care professionals in the delivery of care. 14. Checking and administration of cytotoxic drugs. 15. Counselling patients offering psychological and physiological support of problems and side-effects during treatment and thereafter. 16. Administration of blood products. 17. Preparing patients and equipment for procedures. 18. Monitoring patients for signs of adverse reactions/sensitivity/compatibility of drug and/or investigation. 19. Order and collate results of blood tests appropriate to management of treatment. Managerial 20. Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff below a Band 6. 21. Plan the appropriate skill mix and staffing levels using competent duty rostering skills. 22. Deputise for the Unit Manager in their absence. 23. As part of the Directorate assist with the development and implementation of the Trusts Business Plan and Strategy for Nursing. 24. Assist with the management of unit resources in an efficient and effective manner. Professional 25. Support the Unit Manager in the investigation of complaints within the unit area. 26. Provide advice and specialist knowledge to other nursing staff caring for clients within the speciality. Education and Training 27. In collaboration with the Unit Manager, ensure effective orientation, supervision and mentorship programmes are in place. 28. Assist with the appraisal and facilitation of professional development of all ward staff. 29. Facilitate the development of nursing practice founded on up-to-date information and research. 30. Create a learning environment which actively facilitates learning. 31. Undertake training sessions in the Unit environment evaluating effectiveness within clinical care in patients using appropriate audit tools. 32. Ensure all staff maintain/update the necessary skills/knowledge to care for oncology/ haematology patients. 33. Supporting and assessing competencies of newly qualified nurses 34.Planning and running workshops relevant to practice promoting clinical skills & knowledge 34. Teaching and assessing in the clinical environment- day to day clinical skills. 35. Provide advice which contributes to the care, well-being or education of patients/ clients including health promotion. Professional 36. To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment and the Trust, where appropriate, by promoting a professional image of nursing. 37. Ensure current registration of all qualified staff at recruitment and during employment in line with Trust policy. 38. Ensure current registration with NMC. 39. Participate in / represent the Trust at external events, networking with professional colleagues to maximise the opportunities of promoting the Trust and benchmarking practice with peers.
