Crynodeb

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department focussed on delivering economic growth for the UK. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.

Global Futures Directorate (GFD) sits right at the heart of DBT, forming a core part of the 'strategic centre', alongside the Strategy and Private Office, and Analysis Group directorates. GFD's role is to ensure the department’s decisions around economic growth are underpinned by a strategic approach to long-term and systemic issues in science, technology, R&D and innovation that affect the UK economy.

We are led by Professor Julia Sutcliffe, DBT's Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). As well as leading GFD, Julia is the department's expert adviser on science and engineering, providing support directly to ministers, senior officials and teams across DBT. Julia is part of the cross-government CSA Network, working to the Government Chief Scientific Adviser on key cross-government policy issues.

As Senior Private Secretary (SPS), you will be responsible for leading the day-to-day running of the CSA's Private Office. This is the small inner office team that enables Julia to carry out their senior leadership role.

No two days are the same in Private Office - it is an exciting and typically fast-paced environment where you will work as part of a close-knit team, and be expected to familiarise yourself with the broad remit of the CSA and GFD, covering cross-departmental strategy work on science, innovation, technology, net zero and climate issues, as well as providing DBT with a high quality futures analysis and foresights capability.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Line managing the CSA's Assistant Private Secretary (HEO) and Executive Assistant (EO), providing them with clear direction and support
  • Maintaining close working relationships with private secretaries in other offices across DBT and wider government (especially GO Science, DESNZ, MoD and DSIT), including ministers, SpAds, Permanent Secretary, Directors General, Directors, and other CSAs
  • Acting as an ambassador for the CSA, frequently attending meetings to represent her views and interests with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Overseeing the planning and delivery of a high quality external engagement programme for the CSA (domestic and international), requiring close coordination with DBT's overseas network, trade and investment teams, FCDO HQ and posts abroad
  • With the Chief of Staff, advising and supporting the CSA directly with urgent issues that require her attention, drawing on policy expertise from the wider department as required
  • Working directly with the CSA, Chief of Staff and Assistant Private Secretary to ensure their diary programme accurately reflects their priorities, that they are suitably prepared for key meetings, visits and events - you will be expected to accompany the CSA to certain meetings, taking a note of discussions, capturing actions and following up on these with relevant teams
  • Maintain effective flow of information to and from the CSA, ensuring shared mailboxes are monitored, briefings and other papers are commissioned and cleared (often at pace), and helping the CSA prioritise their workload
  • Act as the lead Private Secretary for the CSA on discrete projects or policy issues
  • Play a leading role in building the corporate presence of the directorate, and supporting the Chief of Staff with business management responsibilities
