All duties of this post are located at St Marys Hospital, Newport. The post holder will assist in the provision of a comprehensive service in obstetrics and gynaecology including: To participate in the resident on call To undertake operating and out-patient clinics as required The professional supervision and management of junior medical and nursing staff as necessary Undertake professional development and participate in audit, ensuring all clinical governance areas are met. One supporting programmed activity per week [SPA= 4 hours] will be allocated for this To update ones clinical and managerial knowledge as required by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. To attend a local annual 2-day maternity update course All care is based at St Marys hospital. The maternity ward comprises 19 beds and is housed in a modern purpose built unit. The labour ward suite contains 5 delivery rooms, one with a pool, and a purpose built theatre that has been recently upgraded with the addition of a recovery unit/HDU. There are approximately 1200 deliveries per year. There is 40 hours per week of dedicated consultant cover on site for labour ward between 08:30 and 16:30 Monday to Friday. Outside this time the consultant is available from home. There is 24-hour on site anaesthetic cover for labour ward. There are 3 consultant led antenatal clinics held within the department per week. General gynaecological outpatient clinics are held daily and there is a recently updated gynaecology outpatient treatment unit where colpscopy, outpatient hysteroscopy, and urodynamics, is performed. An early pregnancy assessment unit runs Monday to Friday within the department. St Marys has 4 operating theatres, one of which is designated for gynaecology. All major gynaecological abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic procedures are carried out. Gynaecological cancers are diagnosed and investigated on the island. Most surgery for cancer, (with the exception of early endometrial) is performed at the cancer centre in Southampton. Infertility clinics are run by a Consultant lead with support from registrars. A collaborative programme exists with a mainland tertiary unit for more advanced assisted conception procedures. There is a urogynaecology clinic held twice a month. We have good links to Southampton University Hospital for tertiary gynaecology services for cancer, endometriosis and uterine artery embolization and the fetal medicine service The Medical Team Consultant Mr N Kenney FRCOG lead clinician Mr A Green FRCOG lead for cancer Miss S Allahdin MRCOG - lead for urogynaecology Miss A Dhanpal Mr Qadeer Warraich lead for colposcopy Specialty Doctors 7.00 WTEs [including this post] SHO Three GP trainees Job Planning, Continuing Professional Development and Appraisal The provisional timetable represents a job plan consisting of 11.1 programmed activities (PAs) per week. The job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out the doctors duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of the consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition it will include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives. Study and professional leave will be granted at the discretion of the department and in accordance with Terms and Conditions, and the Trusts policies and procedures. The Trust supports the requirements for CPD and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Funds are allocated to each specialty doctor on an annual basis - currently £ 800 per annum. The successful candidate will be expected to play their part in the postgraduate activities, teaching and clinical audit. There is an active SAS educational forum led by Mr Ramesh Babu, Associate Medical Director for Education and SAS Tutor. The post holder will be encouraged to register for continuing professional development (CPD) with the Royal College of Surgeons and the post holder will be expected to undertake activities necessary to fulfil CME/CPD requirements for annual certification and General Medical Council revalidation. Teaching and Training The post holder will be expected to play their part in postgraduate activities and teaching. This will include contribution to education and training programmes for hospital medical staff, GPs and other groups of hospital staff. All educational supervisors of doctors in training will have allocated up to one hour per week per trainee for supervising these doctors and to carry out the responsibilities of educational supervisors as indicated in the Health Education Wessex Postgraduate Deans contract with the Trust and according to GMC guidelines. The Trust has close links with the Medical School at Southampton, and Final Year students undertake attachments at St Marys. At this stage any necessary adjustments will be made to reflect the actual hours worked. Job planning will be conducted annually thereafter. Mentoring: The Trust believes that every newly appointed consultant should be offered a mentoring opportunity. Appraisal: Post holders will take part in Annual Appraisal and performance review against objectives as well as specific requirements laid out above.
