Summary
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The medical establishment provides the following staff within the urology department: Nine Consultant urologists (2 on SLA contracts with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust from Northern Care Alliance and Manchester NHS Foundation Trust) Seven Uro-Oncology specialist nurses and one ANP Five Middle grades (2 Specialist trainees, 3 Clinical Fellows plus visiting International Fellows) Five Secretaries The appointee will be based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Withington, Manchester, although may be required to provide outreach clinics and surgery at other partner sites across the Northwest of England and will provide senior input to the management of patients with prostate cancer. Thy appointee will be expected to take a role in the following domains: Mentoring In recognition of the specialist and unique nature of the position there is the possibility of a period of mentorship for up to 6 months (as required) with the incumbent consultant(s). The trust also has a history of supporting experience gained in other trusts which can be negotiated. Prospective cover The appointee will be expected to help provide prospective cover for the prostate cancer service. Service development The appointee will look to support and expand the service, utilizing the latest technologies and techniques. It is expected that the appointee will conduct and lead high level research in conjunction with the GU Research team and the University of Manchester. Teaching and Education The Christie is a designated teaching hospital, and the surgical departments play an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching supporting the University of Manchester Medical School. The post holder will be expected to promote excellence in learning and teaching and directly teach and mentor undergraduate medical students for the University. The department of surgery participates in the clinical undergraduate teaching programme of the University of Manchester and students visit the hospital for seminar, outpatients, and bedside teaching at different stages in their training. Consultants are expected to participate in the specialist registrar and F2 teaching programme. The Christie surgical department also hosts consultant urological surgeons from many countries as visiting surgeons. Secretarial and office support The post will be adequately supported with secretarial staff and the appointee will be provided with access to the Trusts IT system. Management The post-holder will be expected to take a lead role in ensuring delivery of a quality service; including implementing and ensuring compliance with Trust and national policies and procedures. They will be expected to get involved in any service improvements associated within the department. In addition, there are monthly consultant and directorate meetings which the appointee will participate in. The post-holder will work with the management team to ensure that services are delivered within agreed parameters, such as the national cancer waiting times. The clinical director within the consultant group negotiates administrative duties within the surgery department and consultants are expected to accept responsibility for at least one area. This responsibility is regularly reviewed and can be altered following consultation and agreement with the Director and colleagues. Research & Audit It is expected that the appointee will be committed to clinical audit and clinical governance. The unit is involved in continuous audit with local and directorate mortality and morbidity meetings every two months and an annual presentation to the surgical directorate. It is expected that this post will work in conjunction with a part-time formal research post, utilising the close links exist between Christie Urology team and the University of Manchester and the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, which has been awarded major centre status. The CRUK Manchester Institute is a key member of the Belfast-Manchester Movember Centre of Excellence for Prostate Cancer. In addition, Manchester Cancer Research Centre has recently been opened in partnership with the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre. Appraisal and Revalidation All doctors are required to participate in Appraisal and Revalidation, this is not only a contractual obligation, but is also a requirement of their registered body the GMC. Appraisal is an opportunity to take stock of ones professional activities and career and must be undertaken annually. Revalidation is the process by which licensed doctors are required to demonstrate they meet the required standards and are fit to practice. The Responsible Officer will make a revalidation recommendation to the GMC, usually once in a 5-year cycle. The doctor must ensure that all the evidence required, as outlined in Good Medical Practice is organised and sufficiently documented. Successful candidates will be expected to connect to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust on GMC connect upon their first day in post. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Job Planning The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are also subject to an annual review (May September) as detailed in the Trusts Job Planning Policy. It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust. The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any Educational components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements.
