The Trauma & Orthopaedic service at UHCW is comprehensive, spanning 79 beds across three wards. Our facilities cater to patients with simple to major traumatic injuries in the trauma unit and general to complex elective day case surgery across UHCW and St Cross Hospital. As a level one major trauma centre, UHCW offers round-the-clock emergency and trauma surgery, welcoming polytrauma patients from the surrounding region. The department is equipped with a tertiary referral centre, a dedicated major trauma enhanced care unit, and a hyper-acute hip fracture unit. Moreover, UHCW houses a total of 33 theatres spread across Coventry and Rugby sites, featuring state-of-the-art Robotic surgery to address cases that were once deemed inoperable.

The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides specialist musculoskeletal care and often collaborates with the Rheumatology, Physiotherapy, Radiology, and Paediatrics departments to ensure patients are well supported. In this role, post holder will have the opportunity to work with over 30 Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants, supported by Clinical Fellows, Specialist Registrars, Associate Specialists, and Staff grades, including sub-specialties within orthopaedics such as complex trauma, revision arthroplasty, plastics and hand and wrist.

The primary role for the post holder is to lead on the management and provision of a comprehensive, high quality pharmacy service to trauma and orthopaedics wards, theatres, anaesthetics & pain team. Post holder will be given the opportunity to develop improvement projects such as development of pre-op assessment service, day case pathways at UHCW and St Cross hospital and new guidelines in T&O.

The role is well supported by MMT and band 6 and 7 rotational pharmacist, which post holder will provide supervision for their development.

The post holder will have an overarching role to organise and deliver pharmacy related services, care and support for the directorate as needed.

The post holder will:
• Provide specialist clinical pharmacy service to T&O inpatient and elective pathway, major/emergency trauma services which including MTECU and St Cross surgical oversight.
• Provide specialist clinical pharmacy service to all theatres, surgical and associated professional staff to improve the pharmaceutical care of patients.
• Be responsible for all aspects of Medicines Management and Optimisation within T&O and theatres. Working closely with T&O team, theatres, surgical specialties, critical care and associated professional teams to improve medicine management.
• To work closely with and the Intensive Care and Surgical Pharmacists as needed, having a good working knowledge of these areas.
• Lead on the provision of education to healthcare professionals in the pharmaceutical and medicines management aspects of their area.
• Support and lead on the development of service improvement project in their directorate for example pre-op clinics, day case pathways and development of community diagnostic centres.
• Be responsible for the development of policies, guidelines, audits, reports (both financial and clinical) and research relating to the use of medicines within their area.
• Be responsible for organising and being the lead for the day-to-day operational aspects of the pharmacy teams within their allocated areas.
• To be responsible for providing a cost-effective clinical pharmacy service, which is patient and medication orientated through effective supply of medicines, prescription monitoring and prescribing, which ensures the patient receives safe, effective and timely drug therapy.
