Higher Education Policy Advisor / Officer who has experience and an in-depth understanding of the issues affecting students and higher education institutions (Universities / Colleges etc.) is required for an organisation based in Coventry, West Midlands.

This role is known within the organisation as a Policy and Representation Advisor


SALARY: £30,349 - £35,150 pro rata + Excellent Benefits

LOCATION: Coventry, West Midlands - Hybrid working is available working 1 day per week from home

JOB TYPE: Full-Time, 24 Month Fixed Term Contract

WORKING HOURS: 36.5 hour per week, 8.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am – 3.30pm Friday.

Flexibility of working hours is reasonably required from time to time to meet the requirements of the post. This includes occasional evenings and weekends.


JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Higher Education Policy Advisor / Officer who has experience and an in-depth understanding of the issues affecting students and higher education institutions (Universities / Colleges etc.).

Working as the Higher Education Policy Advisor / Officer you will provide organisational advice and support to deliver strategies that build upon the policy development and policy projects and support the publication and dissemination of relevant motions and policy work with students.

As the Higher Education Policy Advisor / Officer you will be responsible for advising Officers and representatives on how best to influence decision-makers within the organisation and prepare briefings and consultation responses on policy that effects the organisation within the local community, regionally and nationally.


DUTIES

Your duties as a Higher Education Policy Advisor / Officer will include:

• Provide advice and guidance on shaping and influencing the Unions’ policy and direction with regards to improving the student experience

• Support the strategic work relating to academic representation and promote equity and inclusion

• Support the development work on governance regeneration in relation to policy making, democratic structures and member engagement

• Offer guidance to the Union’s Leadership Team ensuring organisational policy development is integrated with existing policies

• Advise and equip Officers and students with the knowledge, expertise, and support to enable them to transform their experience at university, in the local community and in wider society

• Provide advice and guidance in relation to organisational legal, financial, and reputational risk on proposed policies

• Carry out research, undertake consultations and gather and analyse data from various sources

• Build and maintain relationships with university departments, faculty and department staff

• Produce written guidance for members on procedures and guidance that needs to be adhered to and ensure the SU website is regularly reviewed and relevant

• Support Officers and members with policy development and academic projects that deliver effective educational and academic representation

• Provide training and support to elected student representatives on policy related work

• Support and coordinate meetings and debates in relation to policy work and academic representation


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

• A relevant degree or equivalent experience which demonstrates experience in HE policy and representation and evidence of ongoing professional development

• Excellent understanding of the issues affecting students and higher education institutions and understanding of student engagement practices and democratic structures

• Strong organisational and policy project skills in a students’ union or comparable influencing environment

• A commitment and passion for developing and delivering policy to improve the student experience and policy development and briefing knowledge

• Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgement

• Effective research and analysis skills needed to build an evidence base from which you will work

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, teamwork and collaborative skills, a high level of diplomacy and tact

• A high degree of personal accountability

• A passion for working with students with the ability to support and empower them to succeed in their roles

• The ability to work well under pressure, use initiative and creativity in solving problems with the ability to make decisions autonomously or advise others

• Ability to manage difficult conversations with empathy whilst maintaining an impartial position

• An understanding of charity law applies

• Knowledge and competence with Microsoft Office applications and good IT skills
