Job description

The successful candidate will support our small team to develop the curatorial
programme at Flatland Projects & Beeching Road Studios in Bexhill-on-Sea. Our operation albeit small is effective and a vital contributor to the artistic ecology of East Sussex. We hope that this Breakthrough role funded by Artswork will allow our work to be more widely received and allow an emerging Curator to gain valuable insight working in our artist-focused* working environment.

This role will include assisting with the:
- Communications with colleagues, artists, external curators, and other
collaboration organisations and galleries.
- Support the installation, and presentation of exhibitions.
- To support the exhibition and artist development programmes.
- Conduct research as part of the development of our civic programming* within
Bexhill-on-Sea.
- To work closely in support of our Artist Development Lead and Director on the
curatorial research and its outreach programmes.
- To help with delivery of outreach programming, this could be: producing
itineraries of days with artists, supporting the production of risk assessments, or
ensuring that we have gathered the access requirements of people we work with.
- Assist Flatland’s Director with their day-to-day activity, and to join them regularly
in meetings to support the production of Flatland’s artist focused activity. The
successful applicant will work alongside Flatland’s Director and will maintain an
ongoing to-do list which will include work to be completed with the Director and
independently.
- Work closely with Flatland’s Artist Development Lead and support the production
of their programme of activity working closely with artists, schools in the local
area, community groups, and project partners.
- Ensure the smooth opening and maintenance of the gallery daily in collaboration
with the Gallery Assistant and other members of staff.
- Be a key holder of the organisation’s premises, and act as a point of contact for
visitors to the building.
- Liaise with colleagues to ensure that the facilities which the organisation are
responsible for are maintained and fully equipped.

*Artist-focused is the term we use which acknowledges that we were founded as an
artist-led organisation in 2018. We focus our work on the advancement of Artists in the Southeast of England. Enabling Artists to make steps towards a more sustainable career.
*Civic programming is a term which we use to describe the work we do that is deeply
connected to our hyper-local, grass roots work in exposing the artistic process to our
community. We aspire to develop a feeling of viability of artistic careers, and to embed artist-led and artist-focused activity into the fabric of Bexhill. We also hope that through this work that our work will contribute to improved wellbeing and combat social isolation in the community that we operate within.
The role will be mainly in person based at the gallery with a portion of work to be agreed in a hybrid fashion working from home. We encourage an in person working style to ensure that this fixed term contract is as impactful for the successful candidate as possible.

About the employer

Flatland Projects is an artist focussed organisation that focusses on commissioning and the development of artists at fragile or critical moments in their careers. Akin to Flatland’s artist-led origin (est. 2018) it’s programme of exhibitions, studio development opportunities, and community engaged work is based in Beeching Road Studios; a terrace of light industrial units dedicated to developing viable career pathways for the creative industries in Bexhill on Sea. Since 2021 Flatland has been leading Beeching Road Studios in it’s development as a centre for the development of emerging practices; housing 27 artist studios, arts organisations, and creative commercial businesses to facilitate and build infrastructure for the arts in the ever-changing political and economic landscape of coastal Britain.
