Summary

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an umbrella term for cancers of the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, thyroid, and salivary glands. It is the 8th most common form of cancer in the UK and has increased in incidence by 20% in the last decade. Based on stage, site, and type of disease, HNC is treated by one or more of the following treatment modalities: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Even following the provision of optimal treatment, between 20% and 40% of HNC will relapse, which can take three forms: residual (cancer that never completely goes away after treatment), recurrent (cancer that goes away, but returns within five years of treatment) and new primary (cancer that arises in a previously treated surgical or radiation exposed field, five years after treatment). To encompass them all under one banner, The Royal Marsden (RMH) team use the term ‘recurrent cancer’.

There is significant disparity in the treatment of recurrent cancer across the UK, with inconsistent case selection for novel therapies, surgical treatment, or re-irradiation. Thus, there is a pressing need to set standards for treatment of recurrent cancers.

No centre exists in the UK dedicated to the cause of recurrent HNC. IReC was set-up at The Royal Marsden in 2021 to accelerate research and improve outcomes for patients with rHNC. IReC has the ambitious aim of bringing together a team of talented clinicians and researchers to create a centre of international excellence and set international standards in the curative treatment, palliation, and supportive care of recurrent head and neck cancers.

RMH has a vital role in championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge practice. We are incredibly proud of our international reputation for pushing the boundaries and for our ground-breaking work ensuring our patients receive the very best and latest in cancer treatment and care.
