We’re looking for an Assistant Director 1 (AD1) to join our fantastic team at HMP Thameside, a Category B establishment for adult males, with safety and security at the heart of it.

The AD1 is critical for the delivery of functional elements of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions. This position is responsible for a functional area within the contract, for example Residence, Security and Operations, or Interventions, and may also include managing part of the accommodation profile.

You will be responsible for the strategic planning of an area and management of resources in delivering against the objectives set out in the Contract. You will also be required to carry out duties of the Duty Senior Manger assuming operational responsibility for managing the prison regime. This will include adjudications and managing incidents in accordance with Incident Management protocols.

As a minimum, you must be Prison Custody Officer (PCO) certified, experienced with Command of Serious Incident and have Custodial experience to hit the ground running! Other accountabilities are:


- Concisely articulates business issues, areas of improvement and formulate a variety of solutions / innovations. Work with key stakeholders to translate findings into a practical action plan.
- Generate innovative ideas that are strategically sound, progressive, and challenge the status quo.
- Acknowledge and reinforce high quality work and outstanding performance efforts; provide consistent recognition and encouragement to the team.
- Develop and maintain up to date Directors Rules which are to clearly detail all procedures operating within the facility regarding your functional area.
- Responsible for delivering continuous improvement through quality initiatives such as ‘Custodial Blueprint’ and LEAN practices.
- Responsible for your functional delivery of Service Delivery Requirements specified through negotiation with the Ministry of Justice in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan (ACSDP).


What you’ll need to do the role

In order to carry out this role successfully, it is also essential that you have previous Leadership and People Management experience and are passionate about building stakeholder management with customers, suppliers and partners. Your collaborative team working and ability to influence, plan and organise to achieve high outcomes will be evident.

You will hold a relevant management qualification for a Senior Manager i.e. CMI level 4 or equivalent or significant managerial experience in a custodial setting.
