Rate of Pay: £12 per hour
Type: 26-week fixed term placement from September 2024, Full-time 37 hours per week
Flexible working options: Hybrid working options available
Location: Verulamium Museum, St Albans

If you have a passion for archaeology and are looking for an opportunity to gain experience and develop skills working within this sector, then this would be the ideal placement for you.
The Headley Trust and Portable Antiquities Scheme are offering the opportunity to gain practical experience in recording archaeological objects found by the public. It is a great chance to acquire new skills and knowledge in this area and develop a career in the heritage sector. In both archaeology and museums, an issue with lack of diversity within the workforce has been identified (see Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and Museums Association) from among those with disabilities, from low-income families, and from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This round of Headley Trust Internships provides opportunities for people from socially or economically disadvantageous backgrounds to gain experience to enter a career in archaeology or the museum sector.
Applications are encouraged from candidates from these underrepresented groups and who have no qualifications or experience in the sector (paid or voluntary).
Please note that previous interns are not eligible to apply for the internship.
As well as giving you the chance to work alongside the Finds Liaison Officer to get a taste of working life in that area of work, you will also have the chance to:
Gain knowledge and understanding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and Prehistoric to Post Medieval finds in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire
Identify, record and photograph an array of archaeological objects
Develop relationships with local people, including archaeologists and metal detectorists
Work with the Museum Curation team to prepare a display highlighting the work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme - For more information about the portable antiquities scheme visit their site here.
About you
We are seeking people with an enthusiasm for archaeology, looking for an opportunity to learn more about the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the work of the wider Heritage Sector.
Working as part of a team you will need to have basic literacy skills and be open to meeting and speaking with people from different backgrounds.
You don’t need any formal qualifications or experience to apply for this placement. Confident digital skills e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a hybrid way (both in the office, on site and at home) would be an advantage.
St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Our centrally located offices in the city are near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.
In addition to working within a great team and a comprehensive salary you will have access to:

Local Government Pension Scheme with current employer contribution up to 19.7 percent employer contributions
