Summary
WHO WE ARE
The Ministry of Defence Police, more commonly known as the MOD Police or the MDP, are a national civilian police force who serve the Ministry of Defence, other Government departments and NATO partners based in the UK.
We’re a specialist police force, with most of our officers deployed as Authorised Firearms Officers, and large numbers delivering marine policing and dog handling roles. Wherever your MDP journey takes you, your career with us will start with training to be an Authorised Firearms Officer to the standards set by the College of Policing.
We protect and reassure by delivering specialist policing to sites, people, and assets essential to Defence and of critical importance across the UK. We provide a highly visible and proactive policing presence within our local communities. Counter terrorism policing is also a major part of our role – being called upon to support the national policing response to major terrorist incidents.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU) provides a dedicated specialist police firearms capability, that forms an integral part of the protection for the UK Strategic Nuclear Deterrent.
TFU officers work and train in a demanding environment and they are amongst the highest trained Authorised Firearms Officers in UK policing. TFU skills include Dynamic Entry and Rapid Intervention, where speed and quick movement to think, respond and act are critical.
Officers pass a rigorous selection process to achieve their tactical Dynamic Search qualification.
As an Authorised Firearms Officer, you’ll be carrying out static armed duties and patrols by foot and vehicle alongside other policing and security partners in and around the sites we protect. You’ll also play a vital role in deterring threats and reassuring both the people who work at these sites and members of the public in the surrounding area.
We have structured shift patterns, and while not every shift will be lively, you will still need to be prepared to respond and take actions if and when something happens -your work with us will be of national importance
WHY APPLY?
We offer specialist training when you start the role and ongoing training throughout your career, a good work-life balance, and a wide range of opportunities for you to specialise and progress within the Force. As a national Force there will be opportunities that will come up if you want to specialise in a range of disciplines, in roles based throughout the UK such as the marine unit, firearms training, police dog handler etc.
We also offer a generous pension scheme with a lower employee contribution rate (around 5%) compared to a Home Department Police Officer which is typically around 10% or higher. We have employee networks and provide fitness and mental health support including access to gyms, fitness instructors, a Force dietitian, and Mental Health First Aiders.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
These roles are only open to Police Officers serving in a UK Civilian Police Force who have completed their probation and initial training qualification (be that IPLDP/PCDA/PDHEP) and have evidence of such. Officers who have left policing no more than 3 years ago at point of application may also apply providing they meet the other pre-requisite criteria. You must also be able to meet all of the entry criteria listed on our website including Nationality and Residency criteria.
Due to the nature of the role, we’re looking for someone with great physical and mental stamina. You’ll need to be able to stay focused, alert, and vigilant at all times regardless of how busy or quiet your shift is.
In addition to this, we’re looking for people with the confidence to take control of a situation while maintaining their composure. Good communication skills, patience, and resilience are vital, but it’s also hugely important that you work collaboratively with your colleagues and act with integrity at all times.
With that being said, we also believe there is power and strength in the diversity of our workforce. We are made up of people from all walks of life and we understand how important it is that we are reflective of the many demographics of people we protect each day.
