Purpose
This permanent, full-time role will see you working as a Strategic Organiser, based at your home (ideally in the Aberdeen area, but wider Scotland will be considered). Our Strategic Organisers represent the best interests of our members, through organising, servicing, recruiting and supporting maritime professionals. This is on an individual basis and through supporting collective work such as negotiations and campaigning activities.
You will initially be expected to work out of your own home and undertake frequent travel within the region. You will need a full UK driving licence. Further, UK wide and international travel may also be required from time to time.
This role has a starting salary of £41,508 and rises in annual increments over 5 years to £47,352 and is subject to collective bargaining.
Accountabilities
• Assist National organisers as required on items such as collective negotiations with employers on pay, terms and conditions, and to establish new agreements
• Attending and supporting existing members in sectors of responsibility by undertaking individual case work and to represent members where necessary with employers
• Provide information to members on activities conducted on their behalf and on any aspect of their employment and welfare
• create, coordinate, and support targeted campaign work to maintain and grow membership densities in conjunction with the national organisers.
• create, coordinate, and support recruitment activities to maintain and grow membership
• to support the development and maintenance of membership structures including through the recruitment of lay representatives and promotion of membership benefits
• to work with other departments and external stakeholders to proactively implement recruitment and retention strategies developed by the union; To contribute towards the development of those strategies, to act to improve the recruitment and retention of members
• support specific membership demographics as required
• represent Nautilus at external organisations as directed by the national organisers and in conjunction with other departments
• Contribute to the development of the organisation strategic plan and departmental plan
• Perform other duties as may, from time to time, be reasonably required
Your skills & experience
• Educated to a degree level or have equivalent experience
• Committed to trade union values and social justice
• Experience of building excellent working relationships and working collaboratively both internally and externally with multiple stakeholders
• Strong research and IT skills (including the use of CRM/databases and Microsoft 365.)
• Knowledge of the maritime industry with seagoing experience (ideally as certificating officer/ engineer level) is desirable but not necessary
• Ideally lives within easy access to the port of Aberdeen (AB11 5SS)
• Must hold a full UK driving licence
