The Aerospace Team is a high-profile team delivering government priorities. The Team works to deliver an ambitious, long-term, sector strategy developed by the Aerospace Growth Partnership – a collaboration between industry and Government. Its mission is to make the UK a world leader in the development and manufacture of sustainable aircraft technologies. A future in which globally competitive UK businesses, supported by a strong national ecosystem, provide high quality jobs and growth throughout the UK while reducing harmful aviation emissions.

To help the sector transform to net zero the team co-funds industry led research and development (R&D) projects through the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) Programme. The Programme started in 2013 and relies on the close cooperation of three partners – the DBT Aerospace Team, the independent Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK. You will play an important role in managing and guiding that collaboration.

It is an exciting time to join the Civil Aerospace team. The sector is racing to develop zero emission and fuel-efficient technology as it strives to reduce harmful emissions while keeping pace with the global demand to fly. Working closely with the Aerospace Technology Institute, you will be managing the Programme to assess and select transformational zero and low emissions R&D projects that DBT can invest in alongside industry. This will shape the future of the UK’s civil aerospace manufacturing sector and transform future air travel across the globe.

You will be the lead for the day-to-day operation of the Aerospace Technology Institute Programme. A Programme with a budget of £195m a year to invest in technology development alongside industry. It is an opportunity to work in a high-profile policy team and develop the skills needed to run a substantial technology investment programme that seeks to transform an industry.

In the Advanced Manufacturing Directorate, we promote diversity and inclusion across our agenda, encouraging our partners to do the same. We value our people, are committed to their development, and ensure they have challenging and interesting job.

You will be responsible for the development and delivery of the ATI programme. This will include the assessment of industry technology proposals (three competitive calls a year), managing the existing portfolio of over 100 R&D projects, providing advice to DBT Ministers and Treasury about which projects we wish to support and creating the right links with the rest of the policy team and wider innovation ecosystem.

The overall aim is to manage the end-to-end system for UK Aerospace R&D to drive clean growth.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing the portfolio of current research projects worth more than £1.3 billion (the stock).
  • Managing the process for assessing R&D proposals by delivery partners and preparing all the evidence and financial information needed for the project investment decision (the flow).
  • Working closely with the Aerospace Technology Institute so their technology strategy continues to provide optimal support to the UK industry and drive maximum value for UK.
  • Working with DBT analysts to complete value for money appraisal in time for each of the three annual investment decisions.
  • Actively participating in the overall governance arrangements for the programme, working closely with senior managers to optimise its impact.
  • There is also a financial and programme management strand to the post, managing the programme budget (managing commitments, reviewing forecasts and expenditure), assessing and report risks and leading engagement with the innovation landscape and the team’s engagement with broader innovation policy issues.

You will also work with a wide variety of companies, from small start-ups to established multinationals such as, Airbus and Rolls-Royce. How the companies exploit the technology we jointly fund, and the benefits it delivers for the UK, is an important outcome the team seeks to maximise.

This post offers a variety of different opportunities. It will involve close working with industry and would benefit anyone looking to develop their understanding of how companies plan and deliver commercial outcomes through innovation. It also involves an element of portfolio and project management, including risk reporting, financial analysis, managing delivery and evaluating impact.
