Summary

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance (GM Cancer) are increasing the opportunities for general practitioners, as part of a breast workforce transformation programme in the region.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint three enthusiastic and experienced GP colleagues with an interest in breast cancer care, to join our breast multidisciplinary team for 4 sessions (16 hours) per week (8 hours would also be accepted). Initially the role will be for 12 months, as part of a regional proof-of-concept pilot.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of 18 consultants across Medical and Clinical Oncology, clinical fellows, a specialist registrar, nurse clinicians, a pharmacist, clinical nurse specialists, research nurses, project managers and clinical trial administrators and link to the breast services across Greater Manchester. There will be an initial period of highly personalised clinical training, with the support of a named clinical mentor. The GPERs will work closely with breast consultants, advanced nurse practitioners and cancer nurse specialists to deliver high quality outpatient services.

There are three GPER roles to be appointed, each for 4 sessions (16hrs) per week, however, applications for 2 sessions (8hrs) will also be accepted. The post holders will work at the main site in Withington and provide support at one of our peripheral sites

The duties and responsibilities of the role, which may be adjusted in the light of changing/developing priorities, include:

• Attendance and review of patients in the weekly breast clinic. This will include new and follow up patients, on treatment.

• Completion of patient administration tasks

• Completion of and maintenance of Good Clinical Practice Certification (regulatory requirement for clinical trial participation, if appropriate).

• Become familiar with ongoing breast clinical trials, as appropriate (for context when seeing outpatients in clinic).

• Provide a point of contact for General Practitioners as a community expert in the field of Breast Cancer.

• Potential for setting up and coordinating training days for General Practitioners in the specialty of Breast Cancer, if desired.

• Potential for maintenance and update of educational material/training for General Practitioners, if desired.

• Maintaining knowledge of local, national and international developments in diagnosis and treatment of Breast Cancer through attendance at conferences, as appropriate.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
