Job Description Senior Health Care Assistant Reports to: Lead Nurse Manager/GP Job Profile: HCA NVQ Level 3 Objective: To provide a wide range of clinical and administrative support to the nursing team. The Health Care Assistant will work under the direction and supervision of the Practice Nurses and/or GPs to provide care for the Practice Population both in the surgery setting and in patients own homes and care/nursing home settings. Clinical Support Will undertake the following: Venepuncture Patients health checks BP recordings Urinalysis Peak flow measurements Height and weight measurements ECG recordings Obtaining blood sugar readings Collection of specimens as required Assisting GPs and Practice Nurses with clinical procedures Chaperoning Assisting with minor surgery as requested by GPs or Practice Nurses Care of minor wounds and application of basic dressings Removal of sutures/clips Vaccinations under a PSD Diabetic Healthcare checks within the surgery, patients own homes and Care home/nursing homes Administrative support Undertake basic administrative activities including: Answering the telephone, receiving and transmitting messages Form filing Arrange patients appointments as necessary Liaise with other health care professionals Electronic patient record keeping Stocking of rooms as necessary Ordering of treatment room equipment and consumables as necessary Team member: To always work as an effective member of the practice team to ensure good quality care is afforded to all patients: Act always in a way as to protect the confidentiality of patients and maintain the integrity of the Patient/Carer relationship. Demonstrate at all times excellent communication skills Maintain and adhere to Health and Safety principles at all times Always be aware of ones own limitations and do not carry out any task or procedure that is beyond the HCAs scope of competence Attend regular study days to update and maintain safe standards of practice Maintain your personal profile The post holder will be required to undertake further training and updating on an annual basis and will be released from duties to do so. The post holder will receive appropriate support and advice from Registered Nurses/Professional Nurse Manager/Facilitator for Primary Care. These are the main tasks to be undertaken within this post. However, this list is not intended to be an exhaustive statement. The role is an evolving one and may be liable to changes in the future. As such, the post holder may from time to time be asked, by the Partners or their representatives, to undertake other tasks commensurate with their grade and post. Flexibility: Flexibility is essential at all times to ensure that the practice is well staffed, especially to cover holiday and sickness. Staff may be required to work at any of the practices premises. Changes in Primary Care: Changes in Primary Care: The post holder should be aware that these tasks are subject to change, particularly when changes are imposed on the Practice by external organisations and the NHS in general. Any substantial changes will be discussed and training given. SAFEGUARDING All employees are required to act in such a way that at all times safeguards the health and well being of children and vulnerable adults. Familiarisation with and adherence to Safeguarding policies is an essential requirement of all employees as is participation in related mandatory/statutory training.
