We are delighted to offer a permanent vacancy to join the collaborative care group as a Orthopaedic Nurse practitioner.
Experience of orthopaedic / trauma conditions is essential, but additional training will be provided. The role requires the post holder to work in a extended role supplementing the junior Dr role within the unit.
It is essential that you can evidence recent study at level 6.
The physical examination skills qualification and a non-medical prescribing qualification would be desirable , however training would be available to support the suitable candidate, along with relevant ward based competencies’.
Dependant on achievement of these qualifications and also competencies the post will be graded as a band 7.
The post is a full time position working on the Orthopaedic wards at University Hospital of North Tees and possibly Ward 4 at Hartlepool.
The Orthopaedic wards are busy unit and you will be required to work autonomously, supporting the multi professional team.

Positively contribute towards the Perioperative experience for patients admitted for trauma management.
Following training, the post holder will work as part of the clinical team managing the trauma patients.
Clinical responsibilities will include;
Routine Perioperative assessment of trauma patients including history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations.
Admission of emergency orthopaedic patients directly from the Accident & Emergency Department, EAU, referring hospitals and GP referrals.
Practical procedures including the management of fracture patients within the Outpatient setting, prescribing of medication and the interpretation of results and responding as appropriate
To provide support and advice to patients and their carers relating to trauma procedures, including development of information regarding specific conditions or procedures.
Where appropriate refer patient to other relevant professional’s e.g. Anaesthetist’s, medicine and specialist nurses for further investigation and treatment.
Work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary/ multiagency teams to provide interventions using advance skill and expert knowledge to ensure patient’s needs are met.
Participate in daily trauma meeting and trauma consultant ward round.
Undertake monitoring of pre and post operative observations. Order and interpret diagnostic tests i.e. bloods, X ray, ECG.
Taking of peripheral blood, insertion of urinary catheters, cannulation, casting upper and lower limb fractures etc
Understand and recognise common potential pre and post op complications and take appropriate actions.
Understanding and application of national early warning score ( NEWS) and initiation of appropriate responses.
Undertake the role of surgical assistance when required to the trauma team using a high level of specialist knowledge.
Adopt flexible working practices to assist in covering junior medical staff.
To liaise with appropriate departmental staff and discharge team to optimise the smooth transition of trauma patients from admission to discharge home.
To prepare discharge letters and prescriptions in a timely manner, reflecting the patients episode of care.
To involve patient / carer views in the development and evaluation of the patient experience.
