JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY To manage the relevant specialist Dental Technology department in the Leeds Dental Institute To provide technical support in the laboratory and on clinic to major specialised services, performing highly complex, highly specialised work as required and providing advice and information to clinicians and occasionally patients in respect of the design, function, fit and colour match of dental or surgical appliances. To provide teaching and mentoring support specific to own technical discipline to work experience students of the School of Dental Technology as required and also occasional teaching support for dental undergraduate and post graduate courses at the LDI, commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder. To maintain appropriate stocks of materials used within the relevant technical speciality, ordering goods as required, ensuring that they are appropriate for the purpose and best value, also maintaining accurate and timely records of goods ordered and received 4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY To supervise the technical staff of the Dental Production Laboratory relevant to the specialty (i.e. Conservation, Prosthodontics or Orthodontics) including: o Monitoring & approving staff leave o Monitoring flexible working time o Allocation of work to technicians within speciality o Maintaining departmental quality standards o Assisting in the induction of new staff o Supporting the on-going training and development of own technical staff group including provision of staff appraisals, giving advice, encouragement and feedback on performance and achievement. To provide technical support in the laboratory and on clinic to major specialist services, performing highly complex, highly specialised work as required and providing advice and information to clinical staff and students and occasionally patients in respect of the design, function, fit and colour match of dental or surgical appliances. This may also include clinical visits to make adjustment to appliances or record patients tooth shades in order to accurately match restorations to their requirements. Produce a broad range of highly specialised bespoke dental -medical devices of the highest standard for the patients of Leeds Dental Institute, with a view to restoring and enhancing facial contours and smile, masticatory function, speech and often psychological well-being. To provide mentoring support to work-experience students of the school of Dental Technology, Dental School undergraduates and dental Postgraduates as required by the Technical Services Manager and Principal Tutor Technician, and commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder. Organise own work schedule to ensure all allocated work is completed in advance of agreed deadlines / appointments. Represent the relevant technical department at appropriate meetings as required To support the Dental Technical Services Manager in the development and implementation of policies and services throughout the dental laboratories To monitor and record departmental activity / productivity and provide relevant, timely and accurate information / data as required by the Dental Technical Services Manager To maintain materials stocks for the relevant technical laboratory, including liaison with suppliers for best price on products and requisitioning consumables on Oracle ordering system Ensure the equipment used by the department is in safe working order, by reporting defects to the Technical Services Manager and / or LDI Workshop and by undertaking routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment according to manufacturers guidelines and local policies. To ensure compliance with the Medical Devices Regulations within the relevant laboratory, ensuring appropriate quality records are kept and procedures adhered to. Ensure Health and safety standards are maintained throughout the laboratory, where all technical staff use a range of potentially hazardous materials and equipment and may encounter highly unpleasant fumes and body fluids. Ensure materials within the department are handled appropriately, undertaking COSHH assessments as required. To interpret highly complex clinical prescription forms, and where required to authorise amendments requiring highly complex analytical skill and decision making with specialist field To ensure that all technical work produced by the relevant laboratory is of the highest standard. To assist the Dental Technical Services Manager to investigate and act upon complaints regarding technical work. To participate in clinical audit / clinical governance. Support the Dental Technical Services Manager in the recruitment of technical staff as required, participating in interviews and the appointment process. To contribute to the planning, development and provision of technical services to the relevant clinical departments, in liaison with clinical and technical staff. Where appropriate, to support and work with the Dental Technical Services Manager in achieving their objectives. Contribute to or participate in research activity as appropriate, including the development or refinement of appliance designs or production procedures. Occasional testing and evaluation of new materials, equipment and techniques for use in the laboratory. To support the Dental Technical Services Manager and designated laboratory clerical officer in the maintenance of records of work allocation on the computerised dental laboratory management information system In the absence of the designated laboratory clerical officer, to occasionally provide relief cover / support in the dental laboratory reception as directed by the Dental Technical Services Manager To undertake appropriate training and participate in regular appraisals to: o Maintain and develop skills and knowledge necessary for the job o Ensure that all statutory requirements in respect of Continuing Professional Development are satisfied. Any other duties commensurate with the grade. Additional Duties and responsibilities In the absence of regular dedicated teaching staff, to provide teaching support to the school of Dental Technology specific to own technical discipline including: Lesson planning, producing teaching aids and course notes Theoretical and practical teaching sessions Training laboratory/ classroom supervision of student technicians Health, safety and welfare of students whilst teaching Marking and assessment of students written and practical work Progress reports / feedback for students and their employers Attend team meetings / curriculum planning group meetings as required Involvement in the interview and selection process for student intake At most this would cover one module of the B/Tec Diploma course or its future equivalent relating to the Tutors area of speciality, and may require a commitment to teaching for approximately 1 day per week for up to 6 months of each academic year, although points 5 8 are likely to occur throughout the year. When required, these duties would be enabled by a temporary reduction in the post holders clinical- technical workload. 5.
