We are seeking a full time operative to workacross the Royal Preston and Chorley Hospital sites in the Waste Management Department, although you will be mainly based at our larger Preston site.



At Royal Preston Hospital we operate a permitted clinical waste transfer station, between the hours of 0730 to 1530, Monday-Friday, accepting waste from customers. Your duties will include being the first point of contact for our Waste Transfer Station customers and ensuring that their waste meets our stringent standards.



Bank Holidays and weekend working is required on a rota basis (with relevant pay enhancements). You will also be expected to undertake extensive manual handling tasks in an outdoor environment, in all weathers.



You will be expected to check and complete waste documentation, both written and electronic to ensure correct record keeping.



Part of your work includes processing items of waste for reuse and recycling and helping the Trust to meet our Green Plan targets, in relation to waste minimisation. The role will also involve general grounds maintenance work and working closely with other operational staff such as the portering and estates teams.



You must demonstrate good communication skills, be organised, methodical and flexible. You will be expected to have an operational understanding of Health and Safety, Moving and Handling and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).



A driving licence is essential.



You will be the first point of contact for our Waste Transfer Station customers and ensuring that their waste meets our stringent standards. You will be responsible forProcessing Trust waste along with extensive manual handling tasks in an outdoor environment, in all weathers.



Other roles include checking and completing waste documentation to ensure correct record keeping, processing items of waste for reuse and recycling and helping the Trust to meet our Green Plan targets, and general grounds maintenance work and working closely with other operational staff such as the portering and estates teams.

• Accepts clinical waste, from within the hospital site and from external private customers, delivered to the facility. Checks and completes all waste consignment and transfer notes.
• Ensures all waste items are moved in accordance with the Trusts moving and handling policy.
• Controls the movement of clinical waste off-site, including infectious waste; cytotoxic/static waste; medicine waste; anatomical waste, offensive waste.
• Organises for all skips and compactors to be emptied in a timely fashion and acts as banks man during lifts (if required). Ensures all skips are packed efficiently including those for furniture, general and non-compactable waste.
• Supervises all staff using the facility to ensure that all wastes are placed in the correct waste receptacles. To include all bagged/containerised waste, flat packed cardboard, plastic bottles, furniture, scrap metal, batteries, strip lights, mercury waste, non-compactable non-scrap items, waste electrical and electronic equipment, confidential waste including electronic media and dental cast
• Maintains a high standard of housekeeping and bin hygiene commensurate with all environmental, health and safety, vermin control, and hygiene requirements. To include site wide waste storage areas. Maintains equipment and facilities including; keeps drains free from obstruction; litter picking and clearing, painting; floor repairs.
• Deals with all spillage and decontamination issues within the facility including; blood and body fluid spillages on the ground or inside waste containers, decontamination of equipment prior to maintenance; decontamination of furniture prior to disposal.
• Other duties including assisting fitters/electricians and delivery and collection for Estates as and when requested
• Identifies problems with the operation of the facility and discusses them with the relevant managers. Participates with the team in resolving issues. Developing and implementing practical changes to the operation of the waste system.
• Reports all incidents using the DATIX system involving the incorrect segregation, packaging or transport of waste from within the Trust or involving the private customers waste delivered to site.
• Undertake continuing personal and technical development to maintain the competency requirements of the post. Trained to operate; forklift truck; bin tipper; domestic waste compactor; cardboard compactor; weigh scales and any other relevant equipment.
• Be prepared to undertake duties as a lone worker throughout the Trust Estate.
• Undertake regular testing of machinery’s safety devices as directed by line manager and in accordance with HSE requirements.
