The UK's leading electricity distribution network is looking for a digital communications officer to help us tell the story of how we're leading the transition to Net Zero with no customers left behind. Working with our Distribution System Operator team, you'll work with some of the country's most accomplished low carbon engineers and specialists. Experience in the utility sector isn't needed, but a passion for using your digital and communications skills to turn complex projects into great content is.

Job purpose

This is a time of unprecedented change for the electricity industry as we move from the old world of large, carbon intensive coal and gas-fired power plants to a much more complex, interconnected world of renewable energy, battery storage and electric vehicles. Energy is one of the most important issues in the country right now, and you will receive an incredible insight into the work that goes in to ensuring a safe, reliable, affordable and green energy supply in a workplace voted one of the UK's best big companies to work for.

It's our job to maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply. You'll work with the people at the heart of this once in a generation transition to help create the flexible, low carbon energy system of the future.

We pride ourselves on being the most innovative network operator in the country, and our team of engineers are responsible for everything from the world's biggest commercial electric vehicle trial to developing an environmentally friendly woodpecker repellent to protect our electricity poles. You'll help to tell their story internally and externally, turning complex projects into compelling narratives.

Principle responsibilities

  • You will produce high quality written material, including internal and external communications, social media, marketing material and media releases
  • Websites: Help the team to develop corporate microsites for the DSO
  • Use data-driven analytics to guide company-wide improvements in engagement with social and external media output
  • Graphic design: Create graphics and Powerpoint templates to guarantee a high-quality external communications approach
  • Video: identify opportunities for video content to support communications activity. Script and film and edit video in-house primarly for social media channels
  • Plan and organise external events, including webinars and in-person events for our Local Net Zero team as well as our stands at industry conferences and internal events
  • Identify opportunities for high profile internal and external communications
  • You will manage the production of print and digital materials such as reports and marketing collateral

Nature and scope

A detailed knowledge of the electricity industry would be a bonus, but ability to understand complex subjects and turn them into stories that engage audiences is more important. Digital skills such as some graphic design experience or video production, or the able to learn would be valued.

.

You could be a marketing and communications generalist, but we'd welcome applications from anyone with digital communication skills or some experience of external relations, design or event management

Person specification - Skills

  • Interpret complex issues and distil important points into compelling narratives that grab the audience's attention
  • Video editing, photography, graphic design or content management systems like Umbraco or Wordpress skills.
  • Written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of planning, co-ordinating and delivering events
  • Organised with experience of juggling multiple tasks
  • Experience working in the media or external communications teams
  • A team player, adaptable, quick and creative-thinking
  • Experience working with multiple partners including senior managers to deliver successful outcomes
  • Some experience of understanding or working with local government partners isn't necessary but would be welcome
  • You will drive collaboration between team members
  • Educated to degree level in a subject or possessing relevant professional qualifications such as NCTJ, NCE, CIPR, CIM or equivalent

Health & Safety Responsibilities

Managers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e. public, visitors and employees of other organisations. This includes briefing individuals working for them and ensuring there is the necessary understanding, competence and application of requirements to work safely and without harming the environment.

Employees will ensure they understand the health and safety risks involved in their work activities and their responsibility to apply the controls needed to manage those risks to acceptable levels. Similarly where work activities can have an adverse impact upon the environment, and where there are legal requirements, employees will understand those impacts and the controls they must ensure are applied.
