Crynodeb

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

UHS Mortuary department has an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified anatomical pathology technician (APT) to join our established team of technicians and support staff at all grades.

UHS mortuary delivers a comprehensive range of mortuary and post mortem services to the Trust and HM Coroner’s service in Hampshire, including specialist neuropathology, high-risk infectious post mortems as well as the supra-regional paediatric post mortem service. UHS mortuary is a busy department, receiving over 3000 patients and conducting over 1000 adult and 250 paediatric post mortems a year.

Core working hours are 0730-1700 Monday to Friday, and the department operates a 24/7 out-of-hours technical on call service.

Praised at our latest HTA inspection for our high standard of working practices, positive staff and culture, UHS mortuary is modern, well-equipped and highly secure, with dedicated adult, paediatric & high-risk post mortem facilities.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

Specific to this role we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

What you’ll do

The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the daily workload, rotating around all areas of the department as required to assist in the delivery of the full range of technical and administrative services offered.

Following completion of a comprehensive local induction & supported training plan, the post holder will be able to perform all patient management processes, including admission, storage, viewings & release of patients & the completion of associated documentation, in accordance with HTA licensing standards. The post holder will also perform the whole range of routine and specialist adult and paediatric post mortem procedures unsupervised.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 technical on-call service on a rostered basis.

This post is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified APT to broaden their knowledge and skills in advanced and specialist autopsy techniques, including paediatric (forensic, coroners and hospital) and high-risk infectious post mortem procedures. The successful candidate would be actively supported in their continuing professional development (CPD).

Part of a specialist teaching hospital, the department supports the training of a diverse range of healthcare professionals, including APTs, consultant pathologists, medical students and biomedical & clinical scientists.

UHS mortuary department continuously seeks opportunities to develop our service and we actively encourage the suggestions & involvement of all staff in all improvement projects. We collaborate widely with a range of other teams and staff groups within the Trust to improve the experience of our service users and raise the profile of mortuary services and the importance of care after death. We also support research and development and have close links with the University of Southampton faculties of Medicine and Life Sciences.

What we’re looking for

Applications are invited from candidates holding the L3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology with experience in routine and specialist post mortem techniques, who are enthusiastic about learning and embrace positive change.
We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible & resilient individual, who values & works well within a team environment. You must be capable of working effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced and dynamic mortuary environment, whilst prioritising the care & dignity of the deceased. High attention to detail and organisational skills are a must, and you must be able to communicate compassionately and professionally when interacting with bereaved relatives and a diverse range of service users.
