Is being the driving force behind excellence 'Your Thing'?

We are now recruiting for a West End Console (Signaller) to join our team at our Neville Hill Train Care Depot. In this vital role, you'll ensure that all train movements within the depot are controlled, authorised, and most importantly, safe. Your efforts will help us achieve set targets and deadlines, contributing to building a railway the North can be proud of.

Connecting millions of people and communities across the North is our mission. With 2,500 trains a day, we connect people to jobs, friends, family, and the wonders of the North.

We're improving rail travel, enhancing the experience on board and at stations. Customers are at the heart of our business as we improve performance and create a better way to go.

We're driving economic value and sustainable growth for the North and its people. Our commitment to the environment means reducing our impact and enhancing the world around us.

Make a difference. Make it last. Make it yours. Make it easy. Make it happen. These are our values.

Ready to make them yours? Join us on this journey.

About the role:

As a West End Console (Signaller) within our Neville Hill TrainCare Centre (TCC), you’ll regulate the movements of trains on our TCC, by operating the operational control panel in accordance with Rules and Regulations. You’ll ensure the safe and efficient movement, train marshalling & servicing of units and vehicles. You'll be in communication with the relevant teams to coordinate plans and to deal with problems, ensuring the safety of all staff working on the TCC.

You’ll report into the Operations Manager and communicate with relevant stakeholders, including Network Rail's York ROC, TCC staff and mainline train crew, ensuring your communicating effectively with various levels of colleagues.

You’ll report and log faults, messages, and contingencies, and communicate these to the leadership team at Neville Hill. Recording the numbers, sets, and times of arriving and departing stock, and communicate any delays and impacts to the leadership team and the wider business. Ensuring the team work to prescribed standards and business requirements, carrying out work efficiently, safely and economically within safety standards and procedures.

Key responsibilities:

This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:

Operating yard power points in cases of failure or emergency, and manage route setting within the depot
Authorising train movements, including arrivals and departures of mainline stock, in a safe, timely, and effective manner
Arranging and control the protection of local work areas to ensure the safety of colleagues and facilities
Liaising with train crews to direct them to their departing trains and interacting with Train Crew Resource Centres if crews do not arrive
Relaying critical communications to service drivers and contractors.

About you:

Successful candidates will need to be responsible and highly motivated individuals that are able to work off your own initiative and adapt to daily changes, when necessary. You’ll need to be committed to providing excellent service through efficiency, high standards and most of all, safety.

If you fancy doing your thing at Northern, you will need to be able to work as a team and excellent concentration and organisation skills are essential. What’s important is an ability to communicate clearly and to work safely, effectively, and efficiently with colleagues and managers.

You will be an excellent organiser and encourage the highest standards of safety and continuous improvement in our safety standards and practices.

We’re also looking for the following:

Ability to work on your own initiative
Awareness of COSHH and basic Health & Safety is desirable, although training will be provided in the necessary safety procedures
Ability to operate and understand TOPS (Total Operations Processing System) or willing to learn.
A natural pride in your work and an eye for detail
A high level of organisational skills and how to prioritise tasks
Willingness to successfully complete further competency training as required
Don’t forget that our selection process includes safety critical medical assessments that cover general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing. And because you’ll need to work a range of shifts, from mornings, nights, weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Leeds depot.

Our Benefits:

Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:

Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependants, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.
Defined Benefit Pension Scheme - you’ll rarely find a pension as good as a Northern pension, and we top up your pension with a generous 1.5 times your contribution.
A generous holiday entitlement - our holiday entitlements can help you feel like you can get away too.
