Norwich City Services Ltd is seeking a responsible and detail-oriented Grave Digger to join our team. In this vital role, you will ensure graves are properly prepared according to specifications, using both mechanical equipment and hand digging techniques while adhering to strict health and safety guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Locate grave sites using provided paperwork and mark out excavation areas
- Set up grave digging equipment, shoring, soil spoil areas, and workspaces
- Expertly operate machinery to remove turf and excavate graves to precise depths and widths
- Ensure gravesites are safe, tidy and respectfully prepared for interments. Including removing diggers from view along with other equipment not needed for interment.
- Refill graves (following grave digging risk assessment) carefully after services, leaving the area clean and flowers arranged
- Remove turf and excavate to correct depth and width using correct hydraulic shoring and rams.
- Maintain equipment and report any defects, damage, or safety concerns to equipment, perimeter gates/fencing, damaged headstones or memorials.
- Proactively work in the cemetery to carry out other work as required when not grave digging, eg clearing woody weeds, fallen branches, grass cutting, litter removal and any old dead wreaths as requested/due to be removed as agreed.
- Updating the graving digging and Norwich City Council AMO teams through the group cemetery WhatsApp messaging forum.
Requirements:
- Full UK driving licence with driver trailer towing experience
- Background working in physical labour roles
- Proven ability to follow procedures exactly and work under pressure
- Customer service mindset with a polite, professional manner and good communication skills
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather
- Ability to use handheld devices (mobile phones and tablets)
- Willing to take pride in your work and work independently or as a team with the ability to follow strict times and measures.
- Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices
