The post holder will work with the Matron, General Manager and multi-disciplinary critical care team members across both sites in monitoring and maintaining standards of critical care nursing and staff development, as part of the unit team. The post holder will manage the critical care budget and the staff within this remit. The role will involve monitoring and maintaining standards of professional practice, supervise, lead and deploy the team and ensure standards are met. Provide leadership and direction to the team acting as a role model and patient advocate. Assess, plan and implement care providing advice and maintaining associated records. Have 24-hour responsibility for the day-to-day ward & department management. To develop a modernized patient centered service in line with national and Trust policy. To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified. DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Duties: Work within the NMC codes of professional practice Have twenty-four-hour responsibility of clinical leadership for the department/ward. Directly supervise and monitor the provision of nursing care throughout the 24hours. Participate in advanced clinical practice, being individually responsible for the safe assessment, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and referral/discharge of patients with specific problems. Be responsible for advancing clinical practice at all levels. Ensuring that best practice guidelines are available and used within the ward & department. Be responsible for the operational management of the service on a day-to-day basis. Ensure an appropriate establishment and skill mix is maintained. Will assist all medical staff where appropriate to ensure the care afforded to the patient is in line with national standards. Provide high quality patient focused service in line with the operational plan. Ensure that the ward & department workforce is kept informed of all relevant issues relating to the delivery of the service. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, actively seeking evidence-based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of the patient. To lead the provision of care in accordance with CHFT Policies reflecting current trends and developments in nursing and the NHS. Use knowledge and experience to take charge of the clinical needs of patients, prioritising workload according to changing clinical need over a 24 period. Utilizing appropriate support as necessary to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained. Provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical and psychological wellbeing of staff, patients/clients, and their relatives/carers. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is implemented in accordance with the Trust Risk Management policy. Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records). To delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members in relation to patient care. In conjunction with the staff team, to assist in developing and maintaining a Ward/Department philosophy and model of care and the Trusts Nursing Strategy To comply with and participate in the Trusts framework of clinical governance within the ward or department area, seeking advice or guidance where necessary. Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients, and visitors in accordance with CHFT Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required. Ensure through good practice that customer care initiatives are improved and sustained. Act as a resource for advice to patients, relatives/carers and staff. To promote actively a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff appreciating national strategy requirements. Professional Duties Ensure all pharmaceutical products are stored and used appropriately. Ensure staff are trained in the appropriate method of drug administration in accordance with national standards. Ensure systems are in place for risk assessment and minimization, including promoting a no blame culture in order that incidents and near misses are reported. To work within Trust policy and procedure guidelines and ensure that these are adhered to by the team. Take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintain own portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements. Participate in the supervision and teaching of pre-post registration students. Be a source of advice, guidance and support to nursing, medical, clerical and others if and when needed. Oversee the learner education and assessment practice within the ward/department environment. Ensure clinical learning environment is conducive for effective learning. Identify training needs for the ward & department and ensure these are fed into appraisal process. Ensure systems are in place to support staff in development, e.g. appraisals, mentorship, preceptorship. Ensure all staff have the appropriate skills and tools to enable them to undertake any extended roles they may have to perform eg, practice assessors, link roles Support the development of the ward & department. Create and maintain networks beyond the ward & department, sharing good practice and information. Promote and lead Patient and Public Involvement strategies in the clinical area. Ensure patient information related to specialty is accurate, up to date and accessible for patients. Participate in research and the development of initiatives in practice and encourage others. Ensure clinical practice is evidence based and act when standards are not being met. Identify need for, participate in and support others to participate in audit, ensuring agreed results are implemented. Lead in standard setting process, maintain consistency, and take appropriate action where necessary. Ensure benchmarking is an integral part of the departments. Managerial Duties Contribute proactively to directorate planning for the development of alternatives for service provision. Provide a cost effective, efficient, and quality service within agreed resources. Manage the ward & department nursing and non-pay budgets. Ensure ward/department stock is adequate, maintained and audited, all equipment is maintained and fit for purpose and staff are trained to use it. Facilitate and lead the team in a positive flexible and strategic manner. Empower and motivate team members to maximize their knowledge. Develop effective communication systems for staff, patients, and carers. To ensure that all staff involved with patient care understand the need to keep the patient, relatives and others up to date with the patient progress. Ensure effective resource management, to optimize appropriate ward & departmental staffing levels. Ensure health and safety requirements are met and adhered to. Present a dynamic, innovative, and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership guidance and advice on strategic, operational and professional issues. Assist in the prompt resolution of complaints. To participate in the investigation of incidents/complaints as required, including preparing detailed reports/letters to complainants. Undertake appraisals for team members. Lead on the recruitment and selection of staff in line with Trust policy, within own area. Attend and participate in meetings as required including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate. Utilize information systems to plan and forecast future needs and ensure appropriate action. Monitor sickness, absence and competence issues and implement Trust policies, e.g., Managing ill health, capability. Financial Duties Manage the budget for Critical Care Managing Self Participate in regular supervision. Attend all mandatory training. Participate annually identifying, developing, and agreeing your own development plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal. Comply with all Trust policies, procedures, and protocols. Carry out duties with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunity Policy. Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary. Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times.
