Crynodeb
Since reopening in January 2023, the Theatre has seen a remarkable improvement in its public perception, sales, and customer experience with a 40% increase in programming and serving as a cultural hub for the entire district — welcoming over 140,000 people in 2023–24.
With strong leadership and communications skills, the Theatre Director will manage and support the development of a dynamic and ambitious team. Leading on our renewed presenting-house vision to continue to attract the best of regional theatre, most recently including, large-scale touring shows like Blood Brothers and Mousetrap, both of which sold out.
The successful applicant will continue to drive our wider programme which has expanded to include a diverse range of family, music, named artists, comedy, entertainment shows, creative engagement, and community activities across both our Main House and Studio, with more exciting partnerships opportunities on the horizon as well as keeping favourites such as our much-loved pantomime which remains a strategic focus, with attendance at over 90% last year.
The ideal candidate will maintain financial resilience and have exceptional attention to detail — crucial for steering operations and business management. This role requires a proactive approach to maintaining our box office performance, which has impressively doubled since 2019, and consistently operates at over 80% average capacity. The Theatre Director will lead a team to continue the expansion of our secondary revenue streams and ensure we uphold a red-carpet customer experience.
Keen to ignite a passion for Chelmsford? Want to help shape its future? This is the perfect opportunity to help deliver our new district-wide Cultural Strategy. Help us make the city a great place to live, work and play, whilst also enhancing our theatre's profile.
