The post holder will work within the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust group of hospitals:
• The John Radcliffe Hospital – Trauma, Neuro, Obstetrics, Vascular, Airway, Plastics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Intensive Care
• The Churchill Hospital – Transplant, Oncology, Airway, and Intensive Care
• The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

A Clinical Fellow post in Anaesthesia is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals. This is a great opportunity to work with a friendly, supportive group of anaesthetists, which is part of the wider Department of Anaesthesia, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The specific aims and objectives will be set by the Fellow in conjunction with their supervisors. The Fellowship will allow development of advanced skills in various anaesthesia disciplines including both planning and delivering anaesthesia to the most complex cases occurring in this specialist centre. There will be opportunities to work with distant, local and direct supervision.

The John Radcliffe Hospital is a Major Trauma centre, and tertiary referral centre for several surgical specialties. The JR2 site comprises 8 theatres and the services covered in this site includes General emergencies, vascular anaesthesia, Major Trauma and cardiac anaesthesia. (Cardiac anaesthesia is provided by the Cardiac Group of anaesthetists).

The West Wing is in continuation with the main John Radcliffe by a corridor connection. The theatre suite comprises 14 theatres over 2 floors and is in close proximity to the Neurointensive Care Unit and radiology departments. The services in the West Wing theatre complex include Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Interventional Radiology. Paediatric surgery is also performed here but is covered by a separate dedicated rota of Paediatric Anaesthetists.

The Churchill Hospital is separate to the main OUH campus in Headington. The theatre suite comprises 10 theatres and is in close proximity to the Churchill Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and radiology departments. CICU is staffed on a 24-hour basis by a separate group of consultants with dedicated trainees or fellows.

On starting the post Fellows work under the direct supervision of senior staff until they have successfully completed appropriate induction to their new site of work. The Fellow will average three half day sessions per week of training activities supervised by a Consultant Trainer. Every three months during the post (or more frequently if required) training will be reviewed by the Supervisor.

Fellows are expected to keep accurate contemporaneous records of clinical activities or events, including pre-operative assessment, pre- and postoperative care, pain relief, critical incidents, etc., using the Trust approved documentation.

Fellows are expected to keep a record of their training including a log book of cases and a record of other activity.

The Departmental Administrator produces a weekly rota allocating each member of the trainee grades to particular duties. It is expected that the successful candidate will perform duties appropriate to the grade and to his/her level of experience. There will be times where the schedule has to be changed at short notice after the rota has been published and to move the Fellows to cover a different list, occasionally not directly related to the module they are currently undertaking.
