Summary


We are looking for a forward-thinking and dynamic consultant in Emergency Medicine, who is passionate about transforming services, to come and join us in shaping the future of Emergency Care. In order to meet the increasing challenges within emergency medicine, we are expanding our consultant base.

The successful candidate will join our existing team of 9 general and 4 PEM Consultants along with a number of Senior Clinical Fellow Doctors, Junior Doctors, Advanced nurse practitioners and Trainee Specialty Doctors. They will part of the Emergency Medicine Team providing emergency care to both adults and pediatric patients in the ever growing population of West London.



1. To advise and decide on investigations appropriate to a given situation and in assessing the significance of results.

2. To work with the shift-coordinator and site team to ensure the safe and smooth running of the Department.

3. To see, treat and discharge or refer ED patients as appropriate.

4. To run all Trauma and Cardiac Arrest Calls, or directly supervise a junior clinician running the call for Educational purposes.

5. To actively participate in the Clinical governance activities of the department.

6. To take part in or lead appropriate research/quality improvement projects.

7. To support the training and development of junior medical, nursing and allied health professional staff.

The Emergency Department at West Middlesex University Hospital consists of majors (with resuscitation room) and an urgent care center (including minor injuries, minor ailments and GP priority presentations). The resuscitation room currently comprises of 5 adult bays, and 1 paediatric bay.The Department is busy, seeing over 169,000 patients per year (20% paediatric) in conjunction with the Urgent Care Centre, achieving a high clinical standard of care and most recently delivering 81% performance in Q3/4 2023-24 against the 4 hour standard. This is achieved through working as a close, co-operative team. Twenty four hour middle grade cover is provided with Registrars in Emergency Medicine and Senior Clinical Fellow posts. At present there are 10 FY2 posts (rotating every 4 months), 5 six month SHO post on GP VTS rotation, 5.4 SHO’s. There is also 2 FY1 doctors who works predominantly in the Observation Unit. It is expected that the post holder will take an active role in teaching and mentoring ED staff.

There is a six bedded Observation Unit and a Clinical Decisions Unit within the department for patients needing a prolonged period of observation, extended investigations or input from the Acute Assessment Therapies Team (OT & Physio) to enable safe discharge home.
