Summary

National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Route Manager to join our Programme Development (Route Management) team, where the postholder/successful candidate will support us in developing commercially viable forward programmes and solutions for the region’s strategic roads, making effective use of intelligence and insight, and making sure our work supports the delivery of the region’s goals.

This position will be predominantly based in our Guildford office, although there is flexibility to work from either our Basingstoke and Maidstone office. Office attendance is expected for 40% of the time.  

What you’ll be leading on

Identifying and assessing route and network needs and priorities (informed by insight into customer, economic, social and asset needs.) to help us develop future asset and delivery plans.
To proactively engage with customer groups, community representatives and major stakeholders (i.e. Ministers, local MPs, Local Highway Authorities, Sub-national Transport Bodies, and other transport providers) and the public (our customers).
Develop and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with customers and stakeholders and act as point of contact for network development needs and emerging schemes.
Identify network needs and initiate studies and early development of business cases and manage the prioritisation of investment works for the route(s) in line with needs, agreed strategy, policies, budget, and efficiency targets.
Build up a detailed picture of the strategic route network across the region (particularly the routes managed) and understand the interactions with the local and major roads networks.
Day to day route management, and both tactical and strategic thinking/planning for future network performance enhancements in line with the government’s Road Investment Strategy.

To be successful

Understanding of the organisation’s goals, strategy, and policies.
Understanding of the organisation’s data and information systems and policies.
Experience of developing business cases and asset management plans, including the management and development of budgets where appropriate.
Asset management decision making (capital investment, lifecycle costs, value optimisation, service & availability optimisation, social & economic knowledge.
Good personal impact and the ability to inspire confidence and positive action.
