Job summary

Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUH) is looking for a fulltime 12 month fixed term Stroke Specialist to join an existing team of 10 NHS and academic consultants providing Stroke services to the people of Nottinghamshire and beyond. NUH is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre for the East Midlands and provides Endovascular, Neurosurgical services, 24/7 Thrombolysis and Hyperacute Care.

NUH hosts the Mechanical Thrombectomy Centre for the East Midlands region. The service is expanding following the successful business case for expanding Mechanical Thrombectomy 24/7. The service is currently Monday to Friday however there is a phased programme of works in place towards the service running 24/7 in January 2024.

You will be joining a dedicated, diverse and dynamic team of professionals providing outstanding stroke care and internationally recognised Stroke research within the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, a partnership between NUH and the University of Nottingham.

NUH is the fourth largest acute Trust within the UK, with a busy emergency department at Queens Medical Centre, which is a level 1 Trauma Centre. NUH provide s services to 2.5 million residents of Nottingham and surrounding communities, and specialist services to a further 3-4 million across the region and nationally.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must have GMC registration and have12 years postgraduate experience of which a minimum of 6 years within Stroke Medicine.

A senior and experienced clinician who will work autonomouslyto a level of defined competencies, as agreed within localclinical governance frameworks. Specialists will be responsiblefor patients in Stroke as an 'expert decisionmaker'.

o Provides expertise in a specialised area, whether deliveringcare in a specific specialty or in a generalist service and willmanage the full range of presentations in their area of practice.o The role will primarily focus on providing direct clinical care,meeting service delivery and improvement requirements.However, the role will be supported by suitable developmentopportunities including management roles and leadershipresponsibilities in, teaching, academia research and servicedevelopment. The details of the balance between clinical careand other elements of the role would be discussed during thejob planning process.o Specialists are also expected to be involved in deliver teachingand training of others. They will be able to work as a memberof a multi-disciplinary team, leading MDTs where appropriate.o Specialists are required to actively engage in CPD activitiesboth internally and externally to their organisations.

The Comprehensive Stroke Centre, at NUH , consists of:

  • 16 bedded hyper acute stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 34 bedded acute rehabilitation stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 18 bedded long-term rehabilitation stroke unit at City campus and 6 beds in Connect House (further rehab beds)
  • A 7 day Fast Track TIA clinic
  • Stroke outpatient clinics
  • 24/7 thrombolysis service supported by telemedicine
  • A regional Mechanical Thrombectomy service
  • Regional Neurosurgical service provision

The Stroke Service currently has six stroke consultants, two academic consultants, one neurologist and one acute medicine consultant, providing a 24/7 service. The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic, passionate team with a specialist interest in stroke care. The Trust is committed to further development of the service to maintain its long standing position in the forefront of stroke care provision.

Job description

  • Ensures patients can access hyper acute stroke beds without delay 24/7
  • Provides access to neurosurgery, vascular surgery and neuroradiology
  • Provides access to Mechanical Thrombectomy currently Monday to Friday, however the service is due to expand
  • Provides access to a brain scan within 1 hour of arrival
  • Delivers a significant reduction in the demand for long term care post stroke and subsequent pressures on long term social care outside hospital
  • Offers access to thrombolysis treatment 24/7
  • Ensures 80% of patients who come into hospital with a stroke spend more than 90% of their time on a stroke unit
  • Offers patients 7 day access to all allied health professionals inclusive of Stroke Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Care Practitioners
  • Offers 7 day TIA service
  • Provides an integrated system of stroke care to improve patient care across the whole region.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential
  • Full GMC registration & Licence To Practise
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP (UK)
  • ALS
Desirable
  • Started CESR in AIM, GIM or other medical specialty
  • Specialty Certificate examination in Stroke Medicine
Skills and Experience Essential
  • 12 years minimum post graduate experience, at least four of which in Stroke Medicine
  • Experience working at minimum registrar level at a large acute hospital
Desirable
  • 12 months experience as a registrar in Stroke Medicine in the UK
  • Experience of working at Consultant level in a large hospital
