Clinical Fellow (ST3+ Equivalent) in Cardiac Surgery,

Applicants are invited to apply for the post of Clinical Fellow (ST3+ Equivalent) in Cardiac Surgery, which will be based at the Barts Heart Centre for a period of 12 months.

The Barts Heart Centre is a unit in London consisting of the cardiothoracic units from St Bartholomew’s, the London Chest and the Heart hospitals. This makes it the largest cardiothoracic and vascular centre in the UK, covering a population of 6 million and providing state of the art management for a full range of adult cardiac, thoracic and adult congenital (GUCH) conditions. There are nine operating theatre suites with two hybrid theatres dedicated to complex aortic stenting and TAVI procedures. There will be over 2000 cardiac and 800 thoracic procedures performed annually by a team of 23 consultant surgeons. The intensive care unit will have 54 level 3/2 beds with a further 71 beds on the wards. Cardiac surgery will be supported by a large cardiology department with coronary intervention, arrhythmia management and heart muscle and imaging programmes. There is a respiratory department including a cystic fibrosis unit and a large academic anaesthetic department.

The cardiac surgery unit runs with 25 registrars who will be part of 3 cardiac surgical firms consisting of 3/4 consultants. There will be 17 junior and 8 senior registrars, shared between the firms. The allocation to junior or senior tiers will be decided by the educational supervisors and based on the level of experience, motivation and communication skills. Trainees can be moved between the tiers depending on their performance.

The clinical work will consist of:
1. perating Theatres – first assistant or primary operator under supervision.
2. Participation in the organisation of operating timetable and admissions.
3. Undertaking daily ward rounds in ITU/HDU and dedicated cardiothoracic wards.
4. Carrying out general ward work under the supervision of the consultant.
5. Assisting in the cardiothoracic outpatient clinics.
6. Participation in regular audit meetings, teaching sessions and research meetings.
7. Nights and weekend cover.

Junior registrars (ST3-6 equivalent)

The junior registrars will be resident on call at night as part of the Hospital at Night Team based on a 1:12 rota with internal cover (1A Band). They will have 1-2 operating theatre days per week and regular outpatient clinic sessions. National Trainees (NTNs) will be given some preference for theatre time as agreed with the London Deanery and be guaranteed 2 days operating per week.

Senior registrars (ST6-8)

There will be two senior registrars on call at night who will be non-resident, and on a 1:5 rota with internal cover (1A Band). This will allow up to 3-4 operating theatre days per week as well as outpatient clinic sessions and coordinator duties.

Regular weekly educations meeting will be organised and all available trainees are expected to attend. There are monthly audit days on which the trainees will be asked to present on going audits and outcomes data.



Barts Health NHS Trust reserves the right to change the parameters of the standard working week, the number of hours additional duty you are required to undertake and the area in which you are required to undertake it, in the light of the requirements of the service. Barts Health NHS Trust will endeavour to give as much advance notice as possible for such a change.

You may be required to provide on-call cover and take care for patients throughout Barts Health NHS Trust, including cross district, inter and intra-directorate. Barts Health NHS Trust reserves the right to change cover requirements in accordance with the needs of the service. Barts Health NHS Trust requires the post-holder to be resident on-call.

We are looking for registrars with previous cardiothoracic surgical experience who are motivated and enthusiastic and wish to pursue a career in the specialty. There will be a local weekly education programme with further options to engage in concurrent research and audit projects. Some spaces will be available to attend the regular pan Thames training days and courses at the Royal College of Surgeons.

There will be a resident rota and non-resident on call rota. Both rotas are EWTD compliant at band 1A with built in internal cross cover. The applicants must have full GMC registration with a license to practice and possess FRCS/MRCS or equivalent
