An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Specialist Nurse to join the Oxford Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team at the Churchill Hospital.

The Senior Specialist Nurse will lead the nursing team to provide expert nursing care to patients referred to the Oxford BMT service contributing to this within the BMT pathway through management of their own caseload.

The Specialist Nurse will
• Use their expert knowledge and clinical judgement to manage patients in the BMT pathway (this may be inclusive of investigation planning/referral, Non-medical prescribing)
• Accept patient referrals to agreed criteria and be identified as the key worker for an agreed patient/client caseload across the BMT pathway
• Decide on and carry out treatment, which may include advice on the prescribing of medicines, or referring patients to an appropriate specialist
• Assess individuals, families and populations holistically using a range of different methods, using physical assessment and advanced history taking skills and other specialist health needs assessments.
• Ensure the provision of continuity of care.
• Assess and evaluate, with patients and /or carers, the effectiveness of the treatment and care provided and make changes as needed.
• Work autonomously within the wider health care team and as a lone practitioner.
• Work across professional, organisational and system boundaries and proactively develop and sustain new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes and healthcare delivery systems.
• Contribute to the on-going development of the BMT service
• Contribute to the smooth running of the BMT service through roster management, role allocation and staff appraisal/development.

In summary, the post holder will provide expert nursing care to patients referred to the Oxford BMT service.

Specifically, this would include:
1. Working independently with patients throughout the BMT pathway. This will incorporate both independent nurse led, face to face and telephone consultations
2. Liaising with District General Hospitals providing effective, detailed communication to ensure seamless treatment during the transplant pathways.
3. Assist in the education and pathway management for DGH services setting up or developing transplant programmes.
4. Working collaboratively with NHSBT service and other registries regarding cell collection and infusion.
5. Act as a role model and resource in expert clinical evidence based practice.
6. Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop effective documentation, pathways, protocols and guidelines for care.
7. Develop and maintain a peer network of support, information and learning with other nurse specialists at a local and National level.
8. Maintain, advance and develop personal theoretical knowledge, high standards of clinical competence and professional development through ongoing self-education and attendance at relevant courses of study.
9. Coordinate and participate in ongoing service review and evaluation, including seeking and monitoring patient experience and outcomes.
10. Participate in research / audit to generate new evidence in area of speciality.
