We welcome applications for a full-time post in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery attracting 10 PAs, based at Wexham Park Hospital. Subject to agreement there may peripheral clinics at King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, and Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot. The posts requires general ENT skills and experience. A specialist interest in head and neck surgery and/or thyroid and parathyroid surgery is essential. We would also expect experience and training in the surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions in children.

The successful applicants will support the current delivery of both adult and paediatric ENT including contribution to the development of these services and raising the Departmental profile through teaching and education to a growing population.

The Department of ENT at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust is managerially part of Specialty Surgery, which also includes Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics, based at Wexham Park Hospital and an ENT Department and Ophthalmology, based at Frimley Park Hospital.

To provide a full Otorhinolaryngology service predominantly for the local catchment population.

The post holder will be expected to provide a general adult and paediatric practice. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, and the running of their clinical service under the direction of the Chief/Deputy Chief of Service.

In addition there is an on call emergency commitment which also involves covering the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading.

The post holder will be expected to participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities.

The post-holder will be involved with the supervision and training of junior colleagues in the department.

The post-holder will be expected to work within the Trust management policies and procedures.

The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.

The post-holder must engage and participate in the appraisal and revalidation process.

The ENT department has a strong reputation for the good relations between colleagues and mentoring is therefore assisted by all the consultants in the Department.

The culture within the Department is that Consultants and middle grades care for all patients on the ward as needed. The daily morning ward round deals with any issues arising if the appointee was unable to review postoperative patients and there is a consultant on site who is available to cover any urgent or emergency problems. Team working is integral to this role in the department.

This is intended to serve as a broad description of the duties of the post. All Job Plans are reviewed with the Deputy or Chief Of Service for Specialty Surgery, who is the Line Manager. A job plan review will take place 6 months following the appointment to assess the duties undertaken and the need for any change. All changes would be by mutual agreement and changes having budgetary or contractual implications would also need the agreement of the Chief Executive.

All consultants undertake a 1:10 on call. The post holder will have support from a secretary and adequate office facilities.

Current locations of clinics are under review but the departmental aim is that cross site travel during the working day is to be avoided. If travel to or from peripheral site is required this will attract appropriate DCC for travel and reimbursement of extra mileage in accordance with the Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service (2003).

All operating lists are undertaken at Wexham Park Hospital Hospital. Operating lists at Wexham Park are 6 hour sessions (5 hours operating and 1 hour for pre-and post-op rounds).
