Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician

An opportunity has arisen for a Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician to join a developing team of pharmacy staff serving Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust. Together with hospital training, the post holder will study part time day release as an apprentice for a Level 3 Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship (Pre-Registration).

The post will rotate between Southport & District General Hospital and Ormskirk & District General Hospital, covering dispensary, aseptic, stores and wards. The ability to travel to both sites is essential.

NB – You must be able to take up post on 1st Sept 2024

Minimal education requirements: 4 GCSE’s (grade C or above) including Maths, English and either Dual Science Award or Biology and Chemistry

Salary: This post attracts a salary under Annex 21 of Agenda for Change of 70% of band 4.



Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust provides healthcare in hospital and the community to 258,000 people across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.

Acute care is provided at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk District General Hospital. This includes adults’ and children’s accident and emergency services, intensive care and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Women’s and children’s services, including maternity, are provided at Ormskirk hospital.

The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

The Trust also provides sexual health services for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton.

Please see attached Job Description for Full Details.The post holder will carry out the training programme for Student
Pharmacy Technicians and complete all assignments and educational
tasks to satisfy the requirements for NVQ Level III and BTEC in
Pharmaceutical Services.

To gain practical experience in the tasks required of pharmacy technicians
under Pharmacist / Technician supervision.

To carry out Pharmaceutical Technical duties in specific specialty areas of
the Pharmacy including dispensing, aseptic, stores, medicines information
and primary care, under the supervision of the Pharmacist / Technician.

The post holder will participate with other team members of the pharmacy
staff aiming to provide an efficient and comprehensive pharmaceutical
service within the pharmacy departments of Southport and Ormskirk
Hospitals NHS Trust, under the direction of the Chief Pharmacist. Duties
will include labelling, dispensing, stock rotation, storage, dealing with
dispensary queries and patient counselling.

The post holder must abide by the General Pharmaceutical Council’s
“Medicines, Ethics and Practice”, “Code of Ethics for Pharmacists and
Pharmacy Technicians” and “Professional Standards and Guidance
Documents”

The post holder must ensure compliance to all Trust Risk Management,
Research Governance and Infection Control Policies and Procedures and
abide by the Standards for Better Health’
