The department has a national and international reputation and has an active programme of clinical, laboratory and medical education research. The department has a philosophy of a multi-disciplinary approach to the care of patients with kidney diseases. There is a core group of experienced nursing and other health care professionals who are responsible for the planning and delivery of services to patients with renal failure in their own homes as far as possible. There are currently eleven consultants (~8WTE) at Leicester General Hospital who provide a full range of nephrology services. The unit acts as the tertiary referral centre for an East Midlands Renal Network covering a population of approximately 2.2 million. The service covers Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, NW Anglia and Northamptonshire and there are additional renal consultants based at Kettering General Hospital, Northampton General Hospital, Lincoln County Hospital and Peterborough District General Hospital. Significant developments have taken place in the affiliated district general hospitals and the surrounding areas. There are satellite units at Boston, Kettering, Lincoln, Loughborough, Northampton, Peterborough, Skegness and Grantham which are managed by UHL. Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
