Crynodeb

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the leading orthopaedic specialist hospital in the UK and ranked amongst the 10 best worldwide for delivering expert comprehensive, innovative and patient focused neuromusculoskeletal health care, ranging from acute spinal injury to complex orthopaedic oncology. RNOH doesn’t only provide expert and safe musculoskeletal care but also collaborates closely with various academic units across the UK (our principal partner being UCL) in order to stay at the forefront of academic research and allow translation of new ideas in the fields of bioengineering and biotechnology to clinical practice in order to ultimately optimize patient care and experience. We strongly believe that we can only maintain our status as the best orthopedic specialist hospital in the UK by continuously innovating and improving.

The RNOH is appointing to the fellowship posts in Sarcoma for August 2025, January 2026 and April 2026. We will also have one post available in July 2024-December 2024.

All posts will be for 12 months on a fixed term contract except the last post in 2024. Applicants should have completed core surgical training and have experience in elective orthopaedics, and ideally an interest in Sarcoma along with hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.

The Fellow’s post will provide exposure to all aspects of the management of patients with bone and soft tissue tumours, primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty and complex limb reconstruction. There will be ample opportunity to assist and gain experience with the full range of extremity and pelvic surgical cases. Attendance at sarcoma and arthroplasty MDT meetings is expected as well as involvement in the diagnostic pathway for tumour patients. The Fellow will be allocated to one of the three sub teams within the unit and have the opportunity to rotate at 6 months. It is anticipated that the fellow will be post FRCS(orth) or equivalent and close to CCT or equivalent with a primary interest in

the above areas of expertise. They will work closely with all members of the bone tumour and joint reconstruction units and be expected to deliver high quality care.

The Fellow will attend fixed outpatient clinics and operating lists. There will be opportunities to sit in clinic with the consultants as a learning experience as well as see patients independently. Likewise, in theatre, there will be opportunities to assist with complex surgical procedures as well as undertake surgery as the lead surgeon. As the fellow gains in experience they will be able to work more and more independently over time.

There will be supervised research sessions. The post holder will be expected to present research at national and international meetings.

There is no on-call commitment.

It is anticipated that this post will provide a vast and unique experience all aspects of lower limb reconstruction and bone and soft tissue tumour management.
