An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare Scientist at a Band 6 level to join one of the largest NHS Pathology Partnerships and NHS Trusts in the UK, specialising in the diagnostics of leukaemia and lymphoma, as well as other associated haematological malignancies. The post holder will have good interpersonal skills and will become a committed team member.
This post is within the expanding Immunophenotyping Department, which plays an integral role within the Regional Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostics Service (SIHMDS) for the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnerships (NHS ESELPP). Our SIHMDS services a population of >3.5 million people in N London and Essex. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking and innovative service, a laboratory that leads research and is involved in national and international collaborations to help determine the future of flow cytometry. The Immunophenotyping department sits within the SIHMDS forming a key area of the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership, one of the largest in the UK. We have excellent collaborative relationships with industry and often beta test the latest equipment.
The service is a progressive and dynamic laboratory providing state of the art diagnostics and disease monitoring services based on advanced flow cytometry and morphology for patients with suspected leukaemia, lymphoma and related haematological disorders.
The department provides state of the art diagnostics using next generation flow cytometry, in which the cutting-edge equipment, combined with a managed equipment service contract will also lend to an enhanced method of working, as well as offering research and development opportunities.
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. We are looking for a suitably qualified individual with a good understanding of immunophenotyping flow cytometry for leukaemia diagnostics, who is a good team player and is confident to work in a large, comprehensive fast paced Immunophenotyping service within the largest teaching hospital Trust in London with a busy tertiary Cancer Services and stem cell transplantation unit.
All our highly dedicated scientists and support workers are supported by consultant colleagues, and these productive working relationships ensure that all staff are ever mindful of our impact on the patient pathway, as well as forge strong links between laboratory and clinical specialities.
The department is UKAS accredited to ISO15189:2012, and the NHS ESELPP currently undergoing transition to ISO15189:2022, as well as full HCPC/IBMS and AHCS training status. All our services are clinically led and underpinned by robust governance structures. Our commitment to quality management and continual quality improvement is fundamental to our success as a Department. The Department is working towards operating a consultant led on-call / call-in service.
We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of IBMS accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage attendance at user groups and professional meetings, with a generous training budget to support attendance. The department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site.
Candidates should have strong communication, interpersonal, organisational skills, HCPC registration and have completed a Specialist Portfolio or equivalent in Haematology (or equivalent), with an interest in leukaemia diagnostics.
