This post is for a Locum Consultant with a specialist interest in spinal surgery . As a successful department, with twin site working at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital (trauma and elective sites), we are looking for a consultant who is fellowship trained in spinal surgery.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent qualification) who are on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or who will be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT/CESR at the time of interview.

The post holder will be expected to provide a General Trauma and Orthopaedic Service, with a specialist interest in spinal surgery. A spinal fellowship is essential. A trauma fellowship is desirable. Flexible working will be required to fully utilise hospital facilities such as theatres and out patients. The post holder will also be expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to participate in audit and clinical governance activities.

The normal duties of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics would be undertaken. This includes ward rounds, clinics, administration, teaching and inpatient support to colleagues and in addition to take part in the rolling trauma rota.

The trauma service is currently covered by a 1 in 10 week rolling rota encompassing 2 Consultants.

Elective spinal work attracts 10 PAs and Trauma activity a further additional 2 PAs.

On-Call Arrangements and Cover of Patients

As we work split sites – we have two consultants on call 7 days a week.

Consultant B ward rounds entail reviewing every orthopaedic patient on a daily basis and liaising with the named consultant when required.

Weekend On-Call = Friday 17:00 – Monday 17:00

Weekday On-Call = Monday 17:00 – Friday 17:00

Routine work commitments are suspended whilst a consultant is on-call allowing the following trauma commitments:

08:00 – 09:00 Trauma Meeting/ Ward Round

09:30 – 13:30 New Fracture Clinic

13:30 – 20:00 Trauma Theatre List
